Whenever a jazz great dies, all their programming is cancelled, sometimes for days, and they do a tribute. I heard a LOT of Max today, and learned a lot about him. Ongoing.

My first jazz teacher actually studied under Max for several years, learning precise techniche, complex rhythms and such.
On his last lesson, Max told him to clutch the sticks in his fists, forget all that he’d ever learned from anyone, and to beat the living shit out of the drums.
