Rims and Tires

This might be a stupid question; please bear with me.

What is the maximum size tire a “regular” rim can take? I’ve got a CycleDesign
(Taiwanese unicycle) with the original rim and a 24 (?) X
1.75 tire. The tire is worn out and I’d like to go with something a bit wider,
like a 2.1, if it’s available. Would this tire work on the rim I have? There
are 2.6" and 3" tires as well - how wide does the rim have to be to
accommodate these sizes (assuming the uni fork is wide enough).

Thanks for taking these questions into consideration.

Re: Rims and Tires

I can see a really wide tire squishing out, but is this really noticable as long
as your pressure is up to recommended? I’ve done some jumping, but not with
anything I’d call a wide tire, and not “big” like some of you would call big.
I’m also wondering- what are the best all-around (conditions) tires for muni-
I’m trying to do more muni, with the 24" Schwinn I have and the 26" I hope to
get soon (Telford?). Also, how do 20"ers do for muni? I remember some pics (John
Foss’s?) with someone on a 20, and a huge tire, but don’t the bumps and slow
speed get to you?

Re: Rims and Tires

When you go to a fat tire, the difference between a skinny rim and a fat rim
will be in how well the tire stays under the rim when you do big sideways
hops, especially sideways hopping up a hill. If you have a fat tire and skinny
rim, the tire can have quite a tendency to fold out from under you. You’ll
also notice a bit of flop during high speed slalom-style cornering. But for
hopping in place, hopping forward, riding stairs, etc. the skinny rim will
work fine. I’d get the fattest tire that you can afford and that will still
fit in your frame.

A note-- A tire with stiff sidewalls can make up in part for a skinny rim.
Intense tires are the stiffest I know of. Has anyone found something stiffer?

BTW, once you try a fat tire, you may never go back:)

Depends how wide your rim is and how wide your tyre is. I’ve only got a 2.1" on
my 20", but a narrow V-section rim and the squirming of the tyre when I’m
doing twisting or sideways hops is enough to cause inadvertant dismounts. While
the rim is great for hockey etc, I’m definately considering getting a wider one.

This’ll depend to some extent what conditions you expect to be riding through.
Big Gazz’ tyres do seem to be popular, but I have no doubt they’d be terrible on
the trails around here (Reading, UK) as you’d need an unfeasibly wide frame to
avoid getting totally clogged up with the clay (it isn’t unusual to pick up 1-2"
of mud on a tyre if it isn’t a good mud-shedding design). Because of this I
won’t go wider than 2.1" on my Pashley.

I started off-road with a 20" and 1.75" tyre and it was OK, but I couldn’t just
ride over many of the bumps that a 24/26 can cope with. I’d also not recommend a
20" for anything over about 12 miles or so as you’ll get really knackered from
pedalling like a dervish. I’m an XC rider but I’m sure that with appropriate
tyres etc a 20" would be great for trials/playbike style muni.
