riding unicycle == 5 balls ?

Hello,

Allright you lot.

Have been trying unicycle for 4 weeks now. Slow progress, best effort =
6 metres, tops.

Is it as difficult as juggling 5 balls ?

At the moment it seems that way to me and it took me 1 year to get 5
balls.

No, it’s lots easier

Unless you are trying to do it with your hands.

Don’t learn on grass, or on a slopey surface. Find a good large flat level
space, like Vanbrugh College dining hall at York University…

Put lots of tall pieces of furniture (we use canteen trolleys and stacks of
chairs in our university dining hall) around at various intervals. Try
getting from one to the next. Try dragging a chair around the floor or
pushing a bike. Practice freemounting and just falling short or
overshooting. Get drunk with friends and get them to hold you on while you
unicycle to the next bar. All of these techniques have worked in the past
for members of our uni club.

Keep your head up back straight, try not to think too much.

And smile!

No, it’s not. If you’re making 6 metres then you’re likely near a
breakthrough point — once you’ve learned to keep your balance reliably
you’ll be able to go for as long as your legs hold out (in a straight
line over smooth ground anyhow).

Keep plugging at it. And watch your posture and weight distribution —
sitting very upright and keeping about half your weight on the pedals
and half on the seat will make a big difference.

Much easier than juggling five balls. Much more fun too, who would juggle
five balls to get to the shops. Come n over to rec.sport.unicycling and
meet some other new to unicyclists and you will realise your not alone
and it gets easier.

Of course it does depend on what level you want to acheive in unicycling,
if your after level five skils it’ll take a bit longer, but level one
skills won’t take a year.

I can’t promise you will be able to do 5 balls on a unicycle in a year.

I don’t think it is as difficult. If you’ve been doing lots of very short
practice sessions, you might try doing one or two hour or two long sessions
of practice, preferably somewhere with some obvious target distances, like
start holding onto one lamppost and try to ride to the next lamppost, and
then the next and so on.

If you’re practising on grass, find somewhere flat and solid, like a
pavement (US sidewalk) or a sports hall or something.

If you’re stuck holding onto walls, try starting riding directly away from
the wall, that might help.

If you can go almost 6 metres it shouldn’t take you all that long to hit the
breakthrough point, where you suddenly find yourself able to keep going for
ages. You’re obviously able to do several wheel rotations correctly, so it’s
just a matter of weeding out the naughty ones that make you fall off, which
should just take a little bit of practice.

I have been playing with five balls again over the last three days and my
best so far is ten throws and catches, hopefully I’m somewhere close to the
point you’re at with unicycling. But given that I first had a go at it when
my brother learnt about 5 years ago and have had brief goes at it a couple
of times since, I think it’s a lot harder to juggle five balls. I’ve got
something to aim for now though, cos if I learn five well I’m going to get
myself two more globalls so I can juggle four & five with them.

Riding a unicycle is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay easier than 5. My experience,
anyway.

Have been trying unicycle for 4 weeks now. Slow progress, best effort =

Is it as difficult as juggling 5 balls ?

When you first start learning to unicycle it will feel more difficult than
juggling 5 balls. This is because you are using your body in a totally new
way that it hasn’t encountered before. Learning to juggle 5 is a lot harder
but by the time you work on it you’ve already got some success with juggling 4
so it doesn’t seem impossible (just difficult).

One of the main things that puts people off learning to ride a unicycle is the
feeling that it is “impossible”. Unfortunately it takes an average person
around 4 to 8 hours practice to push through that barrier and most people will
give up around the 5 minute mark:-) It can take a lot longer than 8 hours if
you haven’t got someone teaching you and you happen to be doing something
wrong (like putting all your weight on your feet, or having the seat too
low).

Just like teaching 3 ball juggling, some people pick things up faster while
others are slower. (And there are a lot of factors involved)

In general though:
5 balls = 1 year of effort
unicycle = 1 week of effort

Re: riding unicycle == 5 balls ?

I can do 5 balls but can’t unicycle. I’ve had the unicyle longer than I’ve
been trying 5 balls. You notice I don’t mention how much I’ve actually
practiced on the unicycle.

Re: riding unicycle == 5 balls ?

Joe,

Thanks. I will keep trying.

Yep go for the globalls.

I got 5 “Guatemalan Hacky Sacks” relatively cheap compared to globalls and very
effective.

They look like crochet material and aree filled with translucent pellets and a
LED and a battery and a switch.

$25 Australian = $13US

Yep. Neither do you mention how long you’ve had 5 balls.

I bet it’s about as easy as three balls.

Re: riding unicycle == 5 balls ?

They say they someone who learns basic 3 ball juggling in 30 minutes will
take a further two years to learn five. That’s my experience of it anyway.
It’s just that hard!

Unicycling, is MUCH easier. On a side note someone at my circus group was
juggling 5 clubs on a unicycle this week! Now that is something to work on.
