I have a railroad track that goes in a semi-loop around my house. It has always been my dream to ride the full circle around my house using the rail as part of it.
Has anyone ever been able to ride on a railroad track? I can get only about five ties and then I fall off. How do you balance? Also, if you fall off how do you get back on? The track is somewhat elevated and I can’t get on it unless I ride on the road and ease onto it. It would really help if someone could at least explain how to balance on such a narrow strip of riding material.
You’ve just got to pretend that your ridding in a straight line. as for mounts, try static wheel
Riding it will jsut take practice.
Getting on it, you can do a static mount as mentioned before, or jump right onto them. Thats what I do with alot of skinnies.
First you wanna get good at still-stands, they’ll really help when riding rails and really skinny skinnies. Just try to get a few revolutions going relatively slow, with still-stands in between if you think you’re going to fall. The slower you can go the easier it is to keep the wheel going in a straight line.
Well mounting is the part I have the most trouble with. The rail looks like this.

The hard part is balancing on the rail before you can get on your unicycle, and after that the unicycle gets in the way. Would you have to do it sideways then twist the unicycle onto the track?
Would it just be easier to mount if you start on the side and hop onto the rail? If so I guess I’ll have to learn to hop.

never ride on railroad tracks, you dont even hear the train untill it to late! I you are going to be an idiot and try it, dont wear headphones, and keep attention the whole time.
But really is your life worth riding around on railroad tracks for one day.
I do it alot and unless your deaf you will hear the train it is not that big of a deal.
Trains are loud man, even quiet trains are loud.
I don’t know the exact science behind it but due to the “block” of air that the train pushes along in front of it, you would quite often not hear a train approaching. I know this because I work for a company that manufactures railway Signals and have experienced this first hand.
It is really not a good idea to play on or around the railways, I have seen some horrific accidents and injuries!

I dont work near them, but I too have experienced it.
I still hear them from a long distance away. When they use their horn, I can hair them from miles away. We have a train downtown in my city, which is about a 20min drive from my house, so its a pretty good distance away, and when it uses its horn, I can hear it in my room, which always sound weird cause it seems like its jsut 2 blocks away, and not 40ish.
You should at least have someone else with you to help watch. You could also get knocked out in a fall, or even disabled somehow, and not be able to move before the train knocked your carcass into the sky. A friend could drag you off the tracks before that happened.
I just noticed your avatar is animated!! I thought I saw it move, then thought I was crazy, cause it wasnt moving anymore. I kept reading your post, and saw it in the corner of my eye agian, and then just watched it, and it moves!! Yipee! lol
the only trians we get on our tracks are the odd one of those up and downy things. they come pretty silently, you can hear the people on it talking before you hear the actualy machine. Although i have only seen one of them and i think it was a one off.
ooh, death by handcar. that would suck. If you’re goign to ride rails, just make sure you use your head. have someone out with you and don’t wear loud music or anything that would prevent you from hearing. Also, its advisable to avoid riding on railsets that contain 3 rails 
its the £1000 fine that puts most people off

train rails go past my front gate. (big driveway tho lol) and one is going past as i read and type this. bigass freight train. should i be worried ? lol.
and another idea wait till a train has just gone past before u ride and u shoulda have a while till another one. well our rails do cos they are almost all freight ones out in the country but still BE CAREFUL.
iv seen 3 accidents involving cars at our gate. horrific. and 2 trucks not far from our place on the same rails.
but i still race them on my dirtbike haha mad fun.
