I picked up the laced wheel today and put the Uni.5 geared unicycle back together. The measured backlash was 0.5mm or 0.020" at the end of the 150mm or 6" cranks which is more along the lines of what I had originally expected. In the previous version with the (necessarily) altered planet shafts, the backlash was measured at 1.25mm or 0.055". The perceived backlash by hand (turning and reversing the cranks) is still noticeable and, in fact, I was surprised that the measured backlash was so small. The perceived backlash while riding is substantially reduced in the modified hub.
I (very gingerly) put three miles (5 km) on it today even though it threatened to rain. Needless to say, I couldn’t wait. The ride was FAST like before but I probably only averaged about 10mph (16kmph) with a burst to a top speed of maybe 15mph (24kmph) but, as you all know, I am a wimp rider.
I will put as many miles on it as possible before I leave for Arizona on March 22. On March 21 I would like to ship it to the first interested candidate (maybe there are some hearty souls still interested in Beta-testing) and I’m still thinking about starting in California and migrating counter-clockwise around the country. I will build a wooden, reusable crate that will be convenient to use and will only cost an additional $5 to ship via UPS since it won’t be cardboard. But I will design it so people can just set the unicycle into a glued, padded retainer and open and close it with four screws without having to worry about designing the packing.
I have a list of about 10 people who originally responded and were interested. Who out there is still a taker?
This is like one of those wonderfull Hammer Films- you thought the creature was dead, did you? It’s crazed inventor pitched out across the cracked ice, the wheel sinking slowly into the murk and credits…
Step right up lad! Who wants to be the first to get a ticket for a ride on the sequal? ‘Blood and Asphault’ or ‘Wheel of the Damned’? I can’t wait to be able to wair the “I survied the one-point-five” t-shirt!

We in NY are still interested. I haven’t checked in with him on this in
the past two weeks, but I am pretty sure Joe Merrill would love to try
one. Our club meets every two weeks (somex more often), and I could lend
it to experienced riders who wanted to give her a tour of the park. I
think the idea of sending her around the country in CC fashion makes sense
for shipping (timing) reasons, so let us know when we should expect her
(even approximately) so that we can order the right sized drool bibs in
time.

I’m interested in being on the list, presuming Chris is also (no need to send it down if its just me). Thanks for the efforts in making the beast, and letting others try your handiwork. There must be great joy in crafting things (for yourself, and for others).
Chris,
You always manage to crack me up when I least expect it.
This is Anne from the NY Unatics. Great idea to send Uni.5 on a tour! Though I’m a comparatively snail-paced 700c commuter, I’d love to try it out (after putting on all my extensive body armor, of course).
Perhaps those who try it out can chip in and ship it to the next testing state. You may also want those who try it to take pictures and write a report or review. We could even fill out a questionnaire you send along with the uni- useful if you wish to ask specific questions or do a multiple choice rating that’s easier to track or compile. But if you’d rather be building the next uni than gathering data, perhaps someone else here can make a .5 comparison chart as yet another science project…
Greg,
I’m still interested! Were we supposed to be scared just cuz the first one
failed??

I don’t know about you but I was scared. I put 9 miles on it yesterday and 5 miles riding it in to work today. I passed the suicide point (the music building on campus) without thinking about it. I was immortal on the battlefield, though, because I had skater kneepads, plastic soccer shin guards, elbow pads, thick winter gloves and a helmet. I had a bizzare, Mississippian urge to don a full-face helmet but didn’t have one. The first version failed at 15 miles and I’m close to that point now.
I remeasured the backlash today and got 0.029" so it may be run in, I don’t know. It’s still much less noticeable than Uni.5 v1.0. It is FAST and a gas to ride. Freemounting is becoming much easier as well as hill climbing.
How many other OK riders are there that are close enough to each other. Doug Massey is in Norman but I don’t know how far it is from Tulsa.
Would you consider adding me to the list? There’s at least one other rider in the Boston area who wants to try (my friend Dan, otherwise known as Uni-Man-Dan, or Dan Who Say), and there are lots of people at my school who ride, although they’re mostly beginners. Although I don’t have much experience with Cokers, I’ve been riding for about 4 years, and I would love to try this thing.
Is there anyone else in my area that I don’t know about? I live in Concord.

Keep me on the list. Last I heard, David Kaplan was planning to drive from
NYC to Rochester for the weekend of April 13, so if timing worked out
around there, that would save some shipping costs, so it could either swap
from me to David, or vice versa on that date.

I forgot the dates of Eurocycle, but if I did go, I’d have to find
somewhere to live very cheaply for, I think about a week following the
convention, before finding my way to Frankfurt
Also, I do not believe I will be able to justify taking any unicycles with
me, so to get the most our of a convention, I’d at least want to be able to
take someone’s 20" on an extended loan
So, anyone want to help me out?
Um, not sure what I could offer in return… I can trade juggling and
unicycling tricks, and I am versed in the rules of English grammar and
American culture.

I would love to get on the Uni.5 tour down here in Phoenix, Arizona!!
There are several riders (myself included) who want to try it and the
rest of the club would love to at least see it. Sorry for just
responding now, but I have been off the newsgroup for a while busy
with Arizuni activities. We meet every other weekend for a variety of
uni stuff and would certainly have a special Uni.5 meet down at Tempe
Town Lake where there is a nice wide paved path.
