Resident Evil 5 (apparantly racist)

I know it’s not out yet but I’ve just been watching some early videos and it certainly looks good, really looking forward to it its about time the 360 got some of the games that the other consoles always seem to get.

On another note, there’s also an article on gamespot about some people being upset that Resi Evil 5 is racist as it is set in Africa so the zombies/enemies or whatever are coloured and since you’re playing as a white man it will damage racial relations and the suchlike.

That made me laugh and a bit pissed off at the same time, no one seemed to care about all the white zombies that were killed off in the first 4 games.

Resi Evil 5 racist = Bollocks, its just a game that looks bloody amazing

I want that game now.

I’m pretty sure there isn’t that many white people in Africa.

People would shut up if you put like 2 white zombies in that game, right at the beginning.

Psh, they are overreacting and looking for an excuse.

Im very excited about the game, and also getting Chronicles for the Wii.

Thats crap. If its set in Africa would you expect the people to be Native American? No you would expect them to be bloody African and African people are black. Therefore people should not be calling this game racist ahhh.

i lol’ed

Oh Giiiiildypoo, where arrrre you?

Why do many people think racist can only be toward African Americans or dark skinned peoples anywhere else. When kids in my school run down the hall screaming whitey it is nothing, yet at the same time if I said black all hell would break loose. I would be suspended, be labeled a terrible person who is a dumb racist. I think people who put up with that are actually quite racist I mean do they thing " I am better than them it is just like when you get bit by a dog, that’s just how it is.". Sad things is kids in my school don’t realize this… Sorry my logic doesn’t work like.

Wasn’t one of the reasons that this RE5 being racist started because some people who had never played a RE game before saw the disease/parasite as a representation of AIDS and you had to kill all the black people to stop AIDS from spreading?

Which is ridiculous! All they’d have to do is play the game to realize that its about frickin’ zombies and RE5 is like the tenth RE game, none of which have had racist implications (as far as I know anyway).

You’re probably right, but this statement is still funny

Yes, and as long as people, such as those who posted before you, continue to dismiss such concerns without actually stopping to consider the issue, you probably won’t.

Just say know.

Yes I think one of the main concerns this person had was that it could be seen as a reference to AIDS and they were unhappy of the implications that this game may set and perhaps the message it gave out to people.

I don’t think many people would have even of considered these implications if this argument hadn’t have been brought up, it hadn’t even crossed my mind until I saw the article and i’ve been watching the progress of this game for a while now.

So the game in some abstract way could be interpreted as racist, but so can many other things. It is a game. It is ridiculous to call a game racist because in some abstract way you could interpret it that way when you know nothing about the game and what it is about. Seems like more people playing the race care…

It can, and should, be called racist if it treats an issue of racial discrimination as a matter of course. It may just be a game, but it can be very powerfull in creating a sense that a certain style of behaviour is acceptable.

But fortunately that’s all nonsense and I’m just needlessly scaremongering here.
We know that video games don’t affect people, right?
As Marcus Brigstocke assured us:
If Pac-Man had affected us as kids, we’d all be running around in dark rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive electronic music.
