Replace crank arms for my 29"

Hello,

I got this Uni on the Craigslist:

The problem is that its crank arms are too short, so I am having a hard time riding it. I suspect that once I am used to it it will be great, but for now, I would prefer something longer. So, can somebody tell me which one to buy? Unicycle.com has a bunch, but I am not sure which one are the right one.

Here are couple of closeups on the crank arms:

Thank you.

Andy

For what kind of riding? 102 is a good size for cruising on pavement, but if you want to idle, do tricks, ride on dirt, etc. you need something longer. 125 would be a safe size for general riding, or for steeps and more serious offroad, go to 140 or 150.

Square taper (aka cotterless) is the type of crank you need.

Keep the 102s for the future!

Of all people, John the thread title cop is the guy who encourages people who post unicycling content in JC. Why?

That’s it. I quit. Where do I turn in my badge?

You will need a crank puller

The stock 150’s on my torker ax have held up ok. Kinda light weight, maybe I will bend them someday, but I don’t do tough stuff with the 29. Anyway, at 10 $ /pr they are worth a shot and will fit that uni.

I don’t know where to find 10 $ torker cranks anymore

These dimension ones should be pretty good, for 12 $. Unless it’s a muni or you ride the hills a lot, you will want shorter cranks eventually, so I would go with cheap 150’s, then buy better 125’s later.

But I thought his thread title was exemplary.

Yes, the thread would be better placed in rec.sport.unicycling, something you could have mentioned. Since he had already posted, I chose to answer the question anyway. It’s just conversation about unicycles along with everything else. In a perfect world, all the unicycle stuff would be where it belongs, but until that happens, I’d rather have people use their brains when forming thread titles. This one will be searchable.

I don’t post much any more, but ever time I lurk through JC it seems there are at least two or more threads on the front page of JC that belong in RSU, usually with multiple replies and no reminders to put them in the right forum!

Right now there are are four or five on the front page. I think 10-20% is too high.

Do some self policing people.

Nice uni. I have several sets of those cranks in different sizes. They’re smart, storng, and have enough Q factor to help with steering.

The ideal choice for you will change as you gain in experience. 102 is short for anything except cruising on the more or less flat and smooth.

150 is a good all round length, with 125s being a nice compromise once you get more confident.

On my 28 (only a bit smaller but a helluva lot lighter than your 29) I ride 114s in summer, and 125s in winter.

(This reflects the fact that in winter, any cross country will be muddier, grass will be soggier, and in the dark, I need more torque when I hit sudden unexpected bumps.)

I have taken my crank size down as far as 80mm (See the thread “Low Budget Poseidon Adventure”) and up as far as 150.

Ordered. How do I replace?

I ordered these ones:

I hope they will fit on my uni.

So, what tools do I need to replace the cranks? Should I instead swing by a bike shop?

Thank you.
