Just a reminder, as there is less than two weeks to go, that there will be an afternoon of unicycle hockey at Darley Fields, Chester Green, Derby, UK. (Location map here)
The pitch is booked from 12pm till 6pm and the event is organised by Emunicyclists. Anyone is welcome to come along regardless of ability and we’ll have no excuses like you’re getting married or you’ll be on the other side of the world on that day

it is quite a trek coming up just for the day so does anyone know of any good muni around the area and fancy doing some on sunday?
i would also need a campsite for the sat eve (or even the fri night as i could even travel up then).

Take it easy
If you’re car based, I’d suggest you camp in the Peak District on the Friday + Saturday nights, which is a drive away from Derby, but not far compared to coming from Cardiff for it. There’s some really ace riding there, big rocky downhills and good long rides.
For the really great riding area in the Peaks, there’s good campsites in Edale + Hope and I can sort you out with a route if you want. Annoyingly I’m off in London getting married that weekend or else I’d be well up for a ride round there.
There are also train ways to get to the peaks from Derby, takes about 1.5 hours to Hope or Edale, there are campsites pretty near the train stations.

It’s about 10 minutes drive away from where the hockey is. There maybe closer/better ones so I’ll ask in the pub tonight after hockey.
I’d be up for a Muni ride on Sunday. 10 minutes drive in the other direction from that campsite is Bramcote Hills which is a lot of fun. Although it’s not that big the day after loads of hockey that’s not such a bad thing.
Of course as John and Joe said the Peaks are close, and between several Emunicyclists I think they know all the best rides (I don’t know them). Not definite yet but there maybe something happening in the Peaks later in the year, watch this space!
A muni ride on the Sunday sounds like an excellent idea - after speaking to people last night at our weekly hockey session we’re pretty sure that we can provide floor space for anyone (unless the tournament proves exceptionally popular) who wants to stay over on the Saturday (and even Friday night) That will probably be in Castle Donington just south of Derby - if that helps anyone - if we’re all in the same place it would help with doing something for the Saturday night - a few of the local pubs are very pleasant and could be just the thing - one even has a boules pitch if that appeals. So if anyone needs accomaodation let us know

btw, after a previous chat, we’ve now adopted the Le Mans Start to our UniHoki games as well
over the grumblings of one or two players who are quite happy to sweat like the proverbial stuck pigs for the next couple of hours as they huff and puff around on a uni, but complain about having to run 20m to get to their unis

We haven’t done a Le Mans start for a while; we’ll have to do it next Tuesday.

we line up on the halfway line with the unis lying behind each team’s respective goallines and the ball on the centerspot
u run across the width of the pitch?
we do our le mans starts slightly differently - ball on the centre spot - unicycles lying down on the centre line sticks behid goal - players line up next to goal - run to centre line pick up unicycle - ride back to goal and get stick then ride back to the ball and play commences - gets a bit skiddy in the winter but I guess it helps develop the who dares wins hockey skills

Yes.
The unis are in a line on the centre line of the pitch. Both teams are
at their goals, touching the goal. Their sticks are propped up on the
goal. We then all run to our unis and get on, ride back to the goal, get
your stick and then go for the ball in the centre spot.

It depends whether you are first back or not
They start off standing against the goal but occasionally fall down in
the chaos of returning unicycles.

Are you keeping the players that arrive as a team together, or is all scratch?
There’s a chance I might be able to make it.

We were looking at scratch unless a team particularly wants to stay together, we’re easy going so we’ll arrange it on the day. It’d be good if you can make it Steve.
After the hockey there will be some games followed by a short uni orienteer to the Abbey for drinks. We’re also planning to have a BBQ (inc. veggie stuff) and drinks during the hockey to keep the energy and liquid levels up.
