The islam one is kinda offensive, as it’s probably not typical of islam. The buddhism and Jahovah’s witness one is just plain funny.
Islam is actually a great religion when it comes to how well they take care of each other and how well everone’s treated.
Western countries are unfortunately only familiar with the extremists.
Yep. The Islamic one is really wrong and mean.
As a Taoist, right on for my flavor of “religion”…
If it’s any help, that list was written way before 9/11, probably closer to the Iranian hostage crisis. My sister published a little book called Shit Happens as Interpreted by World Religions and Philosophies (1992). She didn’t make them up either.
If you think about it, most of them are offensive. If they play on stereotypes, they’re guaranteed to be offensive to some.
I thought Atheism isn’t a religion.
Atheism is the believe that there are no gods, so it could be considered a religion.
Only by someone determinedly playing semantics for mischievous effect.
yeah, that Islam one is definitely offensive…however, I won’t lie, and say I didn’t find it funny…(I probably would of found an Christian or white joke funny…I’m too thick-skinned for my own good)
Those are all great
My algebra teacher told us a great joke the other day:
What do you get when you cross a Jehovah’s Witness and an Atheist?
Someone who knocks on your door for no reason
I read this the other day:
I remember hearing a disertation on NPR (National Public Radio, for those who don’t know) by Penn Gilette of Penn and Teller fame. He said (and I’m paraphrasing here, I couldn’t quickly find the exact quote);
I believe there is no god. I’m not an atheist. Atheists do not believe in God, thus implying that there is a god to not believe in.
Kind of a semantic head scratcher.
It’s an old chestnut. The fallacy is based on a concealed assumption that belief in God(s) is somehow unique among the many possible empirically unsupported beliefs.
No one says, “There must be fairies because otherwise how could people not believe in them?”
Apart from in these amusing ritual exchanges on the subject, no one says, “I’m an afairyist.”
Or the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, Odin, Zeus, Isis, Baron Samedi…
The proper construction is, “If it were not for the fact that there is or has historically been a widespread belief in God, there would be no need for the word atheist.”
Looks like it’s part of a series of “This I believe” essays. If you follow the links below it you’ll find others who believe similar and otherwise.
yes, I find the Islam one really rather offensive…the others are pretty funny though.
Good shit.
Or astrology, or widespread health fraud in Health Food Stores and elsewhere, or Vitamin C…
religions of the world
Heard about the dyslexic agnostic insomniac?
He lay awake all night wondering whether there is a dog.
tumblebug,
Your user name and avatar of a Dung Beetle is so appropriate for this thread.
The others may be offensive to some people too, but the Islam one is particularly bad as it’s such a bad stereotype of Islam, compared to the Jehovahs Witness one for example. Some of my family are JWs, and I know for a fact that most if not all of them knock on doors, as ‘witnessing’ an important part of the religion. Most Muslims don’t take hostages, so it’s an inapropriate and offensive stereotype. Although I admit I don’t know much about some of the other religions listed, so for all I know they could be just as inaccurate as the Islam one.
Being agnostic, I think this one from that list sums me up pretty well: Agnosticism - Maybe there is shit or maybe it happens; then again, maybe not.
