registering domain name/website

Hi Folks,

I’m starting this business, and I want a website and domain name. Any tips on who to register with, who to avoid, how to look out for scams. I don’t want ads on the site or have inflated fees after a year etc.

The BEST place (I have 6 domain names with them) is godaddy.com

I’ve gotten 4 from http://www.mydomain.com/ …they have free email forwarding and stealth url forwarding(if you want to use it with any webspace you already have)
The thing I like is it’s only $8.50 per year.

Yahoo’s pretty cheap right now.

1and1.com are pretty good.

godaddy.com is great. I got mine through them (www.nohillnothrill.com).

It’s 9 bucks per year. That doesn’t include hosting. If you have a computer and a stable internet connection, it’s possible to host a simple site, like mine, off your own computer and save big bucks. PM me if you want to know specifics (it’s a bit complicated).

edit: are you making the site yourself?

Unless you already have a business-class Internet connection in your home (most people don’t, it’s a bit expensive), and a server-class computer, this isn’t really a good idea. Too many things could go wrong, and it can be a headache to maintain.

There are many hosting providers that take care of details such as redundant servers, data backups, uninterruptable power supplies, etc., and they do so at a low, low price. Some providers will go so far as to help you set your site up for little to no extra charge. If you’re paying any more than $20 / mo. for hosting you’re paying too much.

I realize how difficult this is as I host my site off one of my computers from my dorm room at college… seems to work quite well. If you’re a novice, don’t do this, it takes time and effort to get things right.

I went with 1 and 1. I tried mydomain first and their site was very slow, didn’t really make the company very attreactive to me.

I think I will have something up in a week or so. I will post when it is ready and you good folks can check it out!

Yep, all by myself, well…I had the help of a template from the hosting site, 1 and 1.

Yes that’s me with the gas mask! Was working with polyester resins. stinky… bad for my innerds, too.
