recognision

One thing about unicycleing is that its visable, but I seem to have become more
visable since the TV news item. Today I rode across town about 6 miles each way
to vist someone and for the first time in ages had more " cool" " what the…"
and "I saw you on TV " comments than any other.

One comment that confused me for a while however was " are you with that police
thing then" from a small boy on a BMX, the answer had to be no, but what police
thing. The story has become a little clearer, Emma who I was visting has been
demonstrating her unicycle in school assembly as part of a publicity drive for a
sponsered uni and bike ride being done by two local police officers. They plan
to ride Lands End to John O’Groats in 20 days, before they set off tho one plans
to have a bash at the 100meter speed record… I’ll post more info as I get it!

What is the 100m speed record on a 20inch at the moment?

sarah

nb, for those who don’t know Lands End is the Southern tip of the UK and
John O’Groats the Northern. I believe Michel Arret holds the unicycle record
for the trip.

At UNICONs, all the big kids race on 24". the Guinness record on a 24" is
12.74 seconds by Peter Rosendahl, on a Miyata with 5" (125mm) cranks. I think
faster times may have been done in Japan with shorter cranks, but not gotten
into Guinness.

Your most likely source of the 20" record is also Japan or China. If Jack
Halpern is listening, perhaps he can look something up from Japan?

Probably something in the 16 second range or so.

I got to meet Michel Aret at UNICON VIII. He’s a MUni guy too I think. Also the
distance of that ride is something like 900 miles. Is that right?

Still searching for the MUni thieves (hopefully looking a little harder than
O.J.'s search for ‘the killer’)

This snippet from the “Been There, Done That (on a unicycle)” web page
(http://www.unicycling.org/unicycling/btdt/btdt.html) has answers to both of
these questions:

Brian Davis of Tillicoultry, Scotland, aged 33, earnt an entry in The Guinness
Book of World Records when he rode from Land’s End to John O’Groats (901 miles)
in 19 days 1 hour and 45 minutes, from May 16 to June 4, 1980. His record was
broken, however, when Michel Arets of Belgium and Mike Day of London, made the
same trip, following a more direct route - 880 miles (1416 km) in only 14 days
12 hours and 41 minutes, from August 27 to September 10, 1986. Three other
starters could not complete the trip.

wow, if my knowledge of the Great Britain isn’t wrong, then John O’Groats is
somewhere in the very north of Scotland. Is that right? That is, do they plan to
cross Great Britain from the very south to the very north in 20 days?
