rec.unicycling

Well, we are going to try for rec.unicycling again. Ken Fuchs and I are working
on a proposal to create the group. We will post the RFD to the group when we
have written one, but in the meantime if anyone has anything they want us to
consider or cover in the RFD let me know. We do hope to keep mailing list
access, but we hope a newsgroup will be more palatable to people since we have
had a lot of list cancellations due to the high traffic count. We also hope a
newsgroup will reach more people.

Thanks, Beirne

Re: rec.unicycling; DRAFT (Preliminary) Request for Discussion (RFD)

THIS IS ONLY A VERY PRELIMINARY DRAFT FOR A RFD

This is a formal Request for Discussion on the creation of a new newsgroup
called “rec.unicycling” (not moderated).

This announcement is cross-posted to newsgroups whose readers may have interest
in the discussion about the new group; follow-up discussion will take place in
“news.groups”. Suggestions, comments or problems may also be emailed to me at
kfuchs@winternet.com.

                   REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION
                   ----------------------

NEWSGROUP rec.unicycling (not moderated)

PURPOSE For the discussion of all aspects of unicycling, including

<This list needs to be revamped to be in line with the FAQ>
* Where to buy them - quality, price, shipping etc.
* Maintenance.
* Types of unicycles.
* Learning to ride.
* Promoting unicycling world wide.
* International Unicycling Federation.
* National Unicycling Organizations.
* Tips on skills & techniques.
* Artistic Riding
* Unicycle Racing
* Unicycle design
* Conventions.
* Publications.

REASONS FOR NEWSGROUP CREATION (There may be a better section title.) The
traffic on the Unicycling Mailing List has been so great that numerous people
have unsubscribed. The only reasonable way to deal this huge traffic for many
people is the creation of a related newsgroup, rec.unicycling.

We are also looking for greater exposure to the internet and other global
network communities that a newsgroup would provide.

We are looking into getting a mailing list to USENET newsgroup gateway for
those mailing list users who either prefer a mailing list or do not have
access to a rec USENET domain news feed.

NAME The name should probably be rec.unicycling, to match the directly related
Unicycling Mailing List. This is also in line with rec.juggling, from whence
most other readers of the new group will probably come. We also prefer the name
to be an activity, rec.unicycling, to emphasize the personal interaction
involved, rather than be the name of our primary equipment, rec.unicycle(s).

NOT MODERATED There does not seem to be any reason why the group should be
moderated. rec.juggling is not and that has worked well.

NEWSGROUP CREATION The discussion period will be from December XXth, 1994 to
January XXth, 1995.

Please post all discussion in news.group.

If a consensus is reached by the end of the discussion period, a CFV (Call for
Votes) will be posted at that time. The voting period will last for 21 days.

This is by no means the final draft of the rec.unicycling RFD, so please send me
your comments, both negative and positive, from both a users perspective and
USENET (administration) perspective, etc.

Sincerely,

Ken Fuchs <kfuchs@winternet.com

how about those people who say that a new top-level group is a bad idea? (out
of namespace, death of the Internet!)

there will be suggestions to move it under something else I’m sure… if
rec.sport.unicycling or rec.arts.unicycling are unacceptable, then we need to
get the argument straight beforehand :wink:

Yes, the USENET news administrators may not like the name rec.unicycling, which
would be a new second level domain name. However, there are numerous second
level domain names in the rec domain designating an activity such as
rec.juggling, rec.skate, rec.aviation., rec.bicycles., rec.birds, rec.boats,
rec.climbing, rec.collecting, rec.equestrian, rec.gardens, rec.guns,
rec.hunting, rec.kites, rec.martial-arts, rec.motocycles, rec.pets, rec.puzzles,
rec.skate, rec.skiing.*, rec.video, rec.windsurfing, rec.woodworking etc. I
skipped a few and my reference list probably isn’t even complete.

I don’t like rec.sport.unicycling, because almost all rec.sport.* are team
sports. Unicycling is not a team sport, although we do play hockey and
basketball on unicycles. Unicycling is not even exclusively a sport, since many
of us consider it purely recreational or art.

I don’t like rec.arts.unicycling, because most rec.arts.* aren’t a
physical activity.

Recalling the rec.skate reorganization into rec.sport.skating.*, it’s not clear
to me if they are doing it because USENET admins asked them to or because they
wanted to.

I personally believe unicycling is important enough to have its own second level
USENET domain rec.unicycling. Does it really fit anywhere else. Iain may very
well be right that we will be forced to choose another name (domain level), so
perhaps we should think of some alternatives. The alternatives Iain already
mentioned above are actually not bad and I’m sure most of us would prefer
rec.sport.unicycling to no USENET newsgroup at all.

However, I think we should stick with rec.unicycling, but think of some good
alternative third level names (rec.sport.unicycling, rec.arts.unicycling, etc.)
in case we’re asked to change our name.

Thanks Iain for pointing out this potential pitfall!

We may also consider subject line keywords such as ART, RACE, REC, SKILL, etc.
which should begin every subject line of an article to the mailing list /
newsgroup. Please make your keyword suggestions to me and I’ll report all
suggestions to the list.

Stay on Top,

Ken Fuchs <kfuchs@winternet.com
