Really wide rims - 65, 80, and 100mm

For those LM fans out there this might be a cheeper alternative and you could go even wider. I think that 80mm is about as wide as anyone should go with a 3" tire but it would give you massive stability.

There are other manufacturers who do super wide rims for snow bikes but I think these guys are the only ones who go this wide for 24" rims, and they are even 36H

I am playing around in my head with the idea of getting a pair of 24 X 80mm and a set of Kenda Kraze tires to lower my cargo bike just a little bit and get mad volume to take out those bumps. I would probably build one into a unicycle first to see if a 80mm rim would make me change my mind about 24" Muni.

Pretty cool! I think the 100mm is overkill though. I think I will probably get the 80mm! (Too bad they don’t have it in polished alum., like the 24x4!) And the company is based only 50 miles from me, so it would get here fast!

I wonder if these rims are any better then the “Stingray” chopper rims. I have a uni with one and it’s fine for a novelty ride, but I wouldn’t be doing drops on it.

Terry I was thinking of you when I posted.

Let us know how it works out.

Do you need to do anything special with the brakes with your LM rim?

Scott Wallis has CNC’d brake extenders for a KH/LM, or used to anyway. I had that setup before I went to a Rowing frame w/LM.

Yes, good point. I use the CW aluminum magura brake extenders, but I’m pretty sure those are made specifically for the LM rim, so I don’t know if they would still provide enough clearance for the 80 mm rim as well.

Why would you even want such a ridiculously wide rim? That’s just super heavy, and I don’t think it would have many advantages over 40-50mm rims.

A fellow MUni-er first had the LM on his rig, and I still had the 47mm drilled (I’d already broken an earlier KH solid MUni rim on a smallish drop!) and he let me try it. It was a REVALTION! I couldn’t believe the difference in stabilty, especially on bigger drops! And because the extra rim width, folding the tire is a thing of the past! It rolls over everything and just gives me way more confidence to do bigger stuff. But yes, anything wider than 65mm is probably overkill, but I wouldn’t mind trying one.

And as I said, any increase in weight, if any, is not noticeable to me in the least. I say “if any”, because I replaced the KH plastic seat base and lift handle with CF and also got ride of the seat post rail adapter, so it’s basically a wash as far as any weight difference.

Ok, time for a brake! :) :sunglasses:

Terry you could probably combine those adaptors with these offset mounts.

If I had the cash I would definitely be ordering at least one of those rims to try it out.

Those look great! Looks like with those I wouldn’t even need the extenders; which seems to be the point lol! At least not with the LM. They seem to be only available in the UK. Do you know where I can get a set here in the US?

hey guys, i’d contact the website before you buy one, i’m fairly certain these rims are single-walled, and constructed from much softer aluminum than you’d want for trail riding.

Nope, I talked to the owner/pres/head honcho on the phone, and they are indeed double walled. He said they are at least as strong as the LM and that they make them to their own specs.

PS: I decided I wanted to go all out, so I ordered a custom 200mm rim! Can’t wait to try it!

wtf

?

I don’t know anything about them, I just copied the pic from sponges post in the current surly thread.

Good to hear about the double wall. I was not sure if they were single or double.

Terry; 200ml is 8". :astonished: Most auto rims aren’t that wide. What the heck are you going to put on this thing for a tire? Or perhaps your joshing us?

Haha, you probably didn’t see my  at the bottom of that post.

Did any of you ever see those 80mm sand rims that were sold long ago? I’m pretty sure they had matching 4" wide tires.

Welcome to the future of unicycling!
