Re: Wearing out the tire and the pedals!

The tyre on a uni will wear faster than a bike, that’s normal. The wheels
on a bike are pretty much always just going forwards, whereas on a uni
they’re wiggling from side to side as you turn the pedals. That’s for just
normal straight lines… then there’s always the idling, turning on the
spot, hopping up and down and the lark that wears it even more. The tyre
that came with my first uni I rotated a few times before replacing
completely after about three months. I’m just hoping my new muni tyre will
last longer, it’ll probably cost a lot more…

As for a new tyre, I got a 2" Specialized tyre instead of the el-cheapo
1.75" tyre that came with it. A little bit bigger, a little bit more
squishy and so better for off-road and hopping around ‘n’ stuff.

What kind of pedals have you got at the mo? Mine came with dead cheap
plastic pedals on… when I replaced these with bigger metal pedals with
studs in the difference in grip was amazing! I think you can get pedals
like these from pretty much any bike shop as well as unicycle.com. More
grip, more hard wearing, but watch out for those studs. They’ve not got me
yet, but they look pretty mean…

Re: Wearing out the tire and the pedals!

I found that I wore out my first couple of tyres very quickly,
but not later ones. I think this was mostly due to excessive
beginner-type twisting, but perhaps those tyres were just
garbage…

Erin,

I’m getting great results from my IRC Metro tire, a durable
long-wearing tire. Works great on the street but not on slippery
surfaces such as a gym floor.
