re-threading a thread?

where could i take my profile hub to get one side re-threaded? i cant get the flush bolt to go in…

would it be a bad idea to just buy a tap and do it myself?

You should have this in RSU. Is the bolt bunged up or the axle threads or both? Check and make sure first. Trying to start a tap straight into an already tapped hole (sometimes called chasing threads) can be tricky business if not done carefully and with the correct stuff. I thought Profile hubs were hardened which will make the task that much more difficult. If you have a tap handle and want to buy the tap and try it yourself go for it. Use lots of oil and go really slowly trying to feel the threads at the point that they catch and make sure you are straight at that point. Best is to have the axle mounted in a lathe with a live-center pressed against the dimple in the tap when you do it.

Did the threads in the axle strip or get cross-threaded? The axle is hardened steel. I’m not sure how easy it would be to get rethreaded or have a heli-coil put in if necessary. To complicate matters, if the hub is built into a wheel the size of the wheel is going to make it difficult or impossible to fit on the metal working machinery to get worked on.

Are you sure it’s the threads in the hub that are damaged or causing problems?

Have you put anti-seize on the threads of the flush mount “bitch’n” bolt?

If the threads in the hub are actually damaged you may end up needing to heli-coil it. Just cleaning out the damaged threads with a tap may not do it or leave enough good threads left to be able to tighten the cranks on tight enough.
