In our haste to get the page and info up for the 4th Annual LBI Unithon, a
couple of items were omitted.
Please note that in order to be guaranteed a t-shirt for the event, entry
forms should be received by June 1, 2002.
Also, riders are encouraged (but not required) to get sponsors for their
ride. Sponsorship may be a flat amount or a per mile pledge. Either way any
amount no matter how small is appreciated and as always funds raised go to
the Alliance for a Living Ocean. (http://www.livingocean.org"). I’ve made
some sponsorship forms for anyone who wants to use them.
Thanks again and look forward to seeing many of you on June 22nd!
Hey,
What was the average speed in past Unithons? Also what time is
does the ride start and how long will it last? I would like to attend if
possible and I would probably be on a 700c/29". Does anyone want to lend
me a Coker?

Jeff,
The 18.5 mile ride begins at 10:00 am. Some riders finish 2 1/4 hours after
the start and then it can be anywhere up to 4 or so hours until all the
riders finish. Finish time depends on unicycle size and level of fitness. I
have a Coker and take around 2 3/4 to 3 hours to finish (of course, I also
linger at the 4 breaks a bit longer). Two years ago we had two young women
from Germany who are identical twins and accomplished free-style riders.
They were among the first finishers that year riding 24" Miyatas and keeping
up easily with the Cokers.
Good luck borrowing a Coker, but failing that I don’t think you should have
a problem with your 29" uni.

Hey, Jeff. I am pretty sure I can get a hold of a Coker for you if it
isn’t already spoken for, since there are a few Unatics with Cokers who
WON’T be attending. If so, I’ll LYK asap.
The average speed, as I recently told someone else, is hard to gauge bc of
the long breaks ppl took last year (my only Unithon). It seems like ppl
generally rode at 9-10mph while they were riding, and then they took four
15-minute breaks, so the average rider got in 18 miles in 3 hours total.
You can certainly keep up on a 29" uni if you are a fast pedaler.
I took long breaks last year and managed to get in 28 or 29 miles, so I
was averaging about 13mph while riding.

David,
Thanks! That’s all I wanted to know. I am confident that I will be able
to keep up w/ the group if I come.

Okay. I would consider myself a fast pedaler, but I’m no John Foss!
