Hmm, I don’t know. I’m confused.

  1. According to unicyclist.com (which should replicate your result),
the oldest thread is not the one you brought up but one dated 19 Jan
1993 about the creation of the mailing list. The first few years there
was no group yet on usenet and the mailing list was all there was.
(BTW Technically this one might not be called a thread because there
    were no replies.)

  2. According to groups.google.com, the oldest thread in rsu is dated 5
    June 1995.

  3. According to the data I have from someone else (which I’m using to
make an all-time rsu stats page), the first post occurred on 29 May

  4. Those data pertain to rsu, I’m led to believe.

Anyone can shed light on these discrepandies? It’s silliness though,
as uni57 noted.

The question about what happened to all those people was discussed in
rsu some time ago. I think old posters never die, they just fade away.

Klaas,

You know when your thread dies out and then a few days later, somebody finds it, replies, and you go shooting back to the top of the list? Your thread comes alive again?

I found a decade old post from a guy asking for help. Nobody ever responded to the poor guy. So I responded, recommending eBay, which hadn’t been invented at the time of his post. Ah, but you weren’t questioning my wonderfully silly sense of humor…

What I meant to say to you was that perhaps I’ve responded to the oldest post ever responded to. (something like that…) Not that it was the oldest post. Sorry to cause you to “go statistical.”

Thanks for pointing out the obvious  – I will search RSU for the discussion about where those people went. I was looking at old posts when I thought of that question – I guess I don’t handle recursion very well.

As far as the discrepencies you unearthed – I have no clue.

That’s right.

Huh? Before you responded, that post had not been responded to. That was your whole point, or?

FYI, thread title is “What happens to veteran posters here?”, started on 17 Nov 2002.

the original thread on old posters was by dan, titled “Where did they all go?”

Re: Re: help me find used unicycles

Oh, God, you are really making me work at this! I’m sorry everyone. This will be my last attempt and my last waste of everybody’s time.

The humor (if any) revolved around finally answering an unanswered question after ten years, with an obvious answer which didn’t exist back then (eBay).

However… I wondered whether responding to that old post would get me a mention on your 2003 statistics page for…

and this is my final attempt at wording this properly…

“…for being the person who replied to a thread or post that was older than any other thread or post replied to by any other person”

or, they way I originally put it --“will I get recognition for resurrecting the oldest thread?”

Sometimes, my English… is not so good.

The serious part of my post was to mention how interesting it is to read the posts from the early days of the newsgroup – to see what the issues were a decade ago.

Anyway, I’m going to stop spamming the group now.
