A valid point, but only if you use language in exactly that way. What if “racist” or “racism” are used as metaphors for all forms of irrational prejudice? Is a Dyson a type of Hoover? Do you go into a bar and ask for Coke but get Pepsi? It happens over here.
And what is race? Sometimes, we only mean colour. But the Bantus and the Hutus are black and treat each other as diferent races. Under English/European law, the Irish travellers are recognised as a separate race from the Irish, or, indeed, from other travellers - yet travelling is a lifestyle.
My half brother is a racist - very seriously racist, in my view - and he considers himself to be an Anglos Saxon. He told me so himself. Yet the “Anglo Saxons” were a mixed race: Angle, Saxon and Jute, and interbred with the Celts, the Romans and the Norse. Our shared great grandfather was Scottish (probably celtic origin); our shared grandmother was Irish (Celtic origin); another grandfather was stocky and dark haired (not an awfully Anglo Saxon phenotype) and another grandmother was from Yorkshire, and probably of Norse stock. So my li’l bro can’t be Anglo Saxon, but he still swears he is.
At one time, England was six different Saxon kingdoms, often at war with each other. I could go on, and I frequently do.
Racism is prejudice against someone for their background, rather than the choices they have made or thee behaviour they have demonstrated. Nottinghamshire men can be racist about Derbyshire men born only a few miles away.
