Rap songs with good lyrics.

One of my personal favourites is “The Positronic Pimp” by Futuristic Sex Robotz. Most of the rap is not extremely erudite, though it is kind of clever. I really enjoy how Data is portrayed as an s-e-x maniac by taking a few specific events out of context.

The rap includes Data’s poem, “Ode to Spot”, which appeared in the fifth episode in the sixth season of TNG (in case you’d like to listen to it in its original context). Lyrics of the Ode are here and here:

Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,
An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature;
Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses
Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
A singular development of cat communications
That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion,
It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

O Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display
Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.
And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

I don’t listen to much serious rap, so I can’t help you there.

Ode to Spot! I had that memorized, once.

The Rush song Roll the Bones has a short rap interlude in the middle of the otherwise non-rap song. This is as much rap as I can tolerate, as it comes from my favorite band. It goes like this –

Jack…relax
Get busy with the facts
No zodiacs or almanacs
No maniacs in polyester slacks
Just the facts
Gonna kick some gluteus max
It’s a parallax…you dig?
You move around
The small gets big
It’s a rig
It’s action…reaction
Random interaction
So who’s afraid
Of a little abstraction?
Can’t get no satisfaction
From the facts?
You better run, homeboy
A fact’s a fact
From Nome to Rome, boy

What’s the deal?
Spin the wheel
If the dice are hot…take a shot
Play your cards. Show us what you got
What you’re holding
If the cards are cold
Don’t go folding
Lady Luck is golden
She favors the bold
That’s cold
Stop throwing stones
The night has a thousand saxophones
So get out there and rock
And roll the bones
Get busy!

If you’re hard-pressed to find rap with solid lyrics, then you either don’t listen to enough rap, or you only listen to mainstream crap. People like you give rappers a bad name. You claim to be into the rap music, but you haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of the genre, and you complain that you cannot find “suitable” lyricists. Rap is ALL ABOUT THE LYRICS. It’s not just loud bass and grabbing your dick with a mic in your hand.

Here’s a story for you:
[Verse 1]
MAN WE MOVIN’D, me and Jay Lee, That’s my homie and we up about a key
Business is good, got a new wife, I could do this for the rest of my life
Hang with stars, drive fast cars, still wear a vest for protection at the bar
Smoke me a spliff, talk big shit, never in my life will I ever will slip
Don’t test me cuz I’m fast with the steel, bullets come hot but they make cats chill
Ready to kill if a cat comes short, nigga lord oh mercy dead on the porch
I gotta do this cuz I can’t hesitate, if I do it too early then I’m comin’ in late
Called Jay Lee, he said “Cool, Man I’m glad you got rid of that fool”
He said, “There’s a concert goin’ downtown, The O’ Jays, Whispers and James Brown”
“Before you come can you make this round, we got a package comin’ off Greyhound”
I said, “We do? Why you didn’t tell me?”
He said, “I was off with the family”
I thought for a sec then said “Okay”
That’s the homie Jay Lee, that’s the homie from the way
Got the information, got to the spot, picked up the drop then I got popped
They said “We got you”, read me my rights, and all I could think about was my wife
Got to the station, called Jay Lee
He said “Ain’t nothin’ I can do for ya homie”
Hung up the phone, I heard the dial tone
Now I’m thinkin’, “What the hell is goin’ on?”
Damn

[Verse 2]
I had a good lawyer, I got five years, Jay Lee did it to boost his career
Gave me up, to get a bigger cut and I didn’t even see it cuz I was caught up in the lust
Man this trial dun made me broke, nobody’s laughin’ but I feel like a joke
My wife is there, she’s filled with tears, She’ll have a new man in five years
I got a cold heart, I ain’t gon’ lie, but that shit right there made me cry
Trapped in the cell, the first day in my cellmate shanked me in the back with a pen
I could feel it go in, I turned for revenge, he started screamin’ I killed his friend
I started to shake, he started to fuss, he said “Over a god damn six hundred bucks!”
Man he could’a killed me, he started to laugh, he said I’m gonna have to live with my past
Let the demon sit up in my brain from bringin’ that pain, from movin’ that caine
I’m sittin’ there bleedin’, shit is misleadin’, I’m in a hospital on the very first evening
Grittin’ my teeth cuz life ain’t sweet
Now I’m trapped in the belly of the beast, shit

[Verse 3]
Three sixty five, I did it five times and I walked out with Allah in my mind
No red meats, I’m back on the streets, thangs done changed, it’s a new game
Cats that I knew that was into books had flipped the script and turned into crooks
Homies would say that the playa Jay Lee would always say good things about me
I say “Fo’ real?”, They say “Fo’ real”
Too bad the homie died in a dope deal
"He left you a key for a mailbox, he said sorry ‘bout somethin’ then he stopped
I took the key to the mail box, opened it up, and you know what?
Jay Lee left me 92 G’s and a note that read “would I please
Forgive me friend, for I have sinned.”
“Sometimes we forget what life we’re in”
“I know money won’t repay the hurt, but maybe it could wash away the dirt”
“Cuz we were born with hearts of gold, but as we get old, the heart gets cold”
I folded the note, and kept it with me so I could always be with the homie Jay Lee
I thought good things, like before I done drugs, and before the train with no love
I called my wife, she was surprised
She took me back, now how you love that?
And just like that, I’m out of the game
That was the last stop on that train
Shit, I’ma tell ya…
And that was the last stop on that train

Woah there! Calm down! I am a big fan of rap, and have listened to a wide variety of artists, and almost no mainstream rap. I didn’t say “most rap nowadays”, I said “a lot of rap nowadays”. In fact, I was actually referring to most of the garbage that gets past off as hip hop nowadays that you would hear on the radio. The whole reason why I started this thread was so that I would be able to find new artists that didn’t just go with what’s popular, because if you ask the average guy on the street today, they will tell you to listen to DJ UNK or something like that. I think that you completely misunderstood my thoughts on rap music. I wouldn’t even make such a thread if I didn’t have an appreciation for rap, or I thought that all rap has terrible lyrics.

If you are wondering, my favorite rap artists nowadays are:
-Hieroglyphics
-Swollen Members
-Us 3 (Awesome mixture of Jazz and old school rap. You gotta check em out)
-Blue Scholars
-Delinquent Habits
-Sweatshop union (though I got a bit tired of them, sometimes I still listen to them.)
-Notorious B.I.G. (I haven’t heard to much from him though, I need to. I like Machine gun funk and Big Poppa)
-Sir Mix Alot (when I’m in the mood)

I might be forgetting a few, but yeah. I definitely don’t listen simply to the rap that’s popular nowadays, and I do not dislike rap. Rap is great, I just want to know of MORE rappers that write good lyrics, not just be recommended to listen to unimaginative garbage with no talent in the rap and all in the instrumentals, because that’s the stuff that most people seem to know about nowadays, not the good stuff.

That is indeed a good song.

how are we for swearing in this thread
cause
“187” by snoop dog & dr dre
i belive has some very good lyrics

Swearing is fine in the songs you post. I don’t think that one thread like this would be enough to set off a nanny-alarm.

I’m imagining some of the swear words that might be in the lyrics and I’m guessing they are a bit stronger than words like sh*t and a$$. Maybe it’s prudent to bleep them out on this family forum? And also be mindful of whether the subject matter is appropriate for a family forum. How many exceptions-to-the-rule threads can we create before this is no longer a family-oriented forum?

What if you were a 10 year old avid unicyclist and your parents forbade you from viewing this valuable forum?

Don’t answer that. Too many threads turn into arguments. Please just continue to be careful what you post.

This did set off a nanny alarm… me.

Alright Uni57, that sounds fair (What’s your name? It’s weird how I don’t know your name).

Yeah, try your best to bleep out swear words. If you miss a few, probably not a big deal, but do make an effort to insert * into swear words. We would like to keep this forum open to young unicyclists with overprotective parents.

I think parents that overprotective would still hate the idea of *'s, but I’ll play along.

Often times, the parents will only go as far as to put in nanny software. The parents may not like it, but the nanny software may not mind, and that’s probably the determining factor.

It say’s it right below where it says uni57. Dave Lowell.

Back to the topic of swear words: if a kid is old enough to know how to log in to an online forum , he’s heard almost every bad word at some point in his life. I knew the worst of the worst before age 10, but to this day I don’t say them. I don’t care about swear words, and if I had kids I think I would only care if they’re younger than 7 or 8.

But I know someone is going to say, “well you haven’t been in that situation so you don’t know how you would act.” Allow me to respond before someone says that. I understand that I don’t know how I would act, I’m only guessing.

I really would like to avoid an argument. I am just explaining myself. If you want to argue what I said, don’t bother. I will not return to this thread if you try to start an argument.

Let me tell you, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with swearing, whether a 3 year old does it or an 80 year old does it. I am against insulting in an unnecessarily rude manner, but that doesn’t apply to all cases where swear words are used.

But that’s not why it’s important to not swear on here. It’s important because these kids should be allowed to access this forum, not because we would like to be a part of the hysterical covering of the children’s ears. It may be alright for these kids to hear these words, but that doesn’t matter because it’s the parents that decide how they want to restrict internet usage.

Every swear has been said on this site and continues to be said. I really dont think its a huge problem with software and stuff. Weve never been like a flame forum where every post is like “F*** dude, last night was the Fing S*. Ni**** be *** *** all over. Rode my uni like a mother ** and ripped my *** open when I **** up trying to grind this S***y rail.”

I dont think we will ever be like that, but once we start to tread that way (Doubt it) thats when we will have to make more of an issue of it.

Anyways, some older stuff, like NWA is sweet. For its time, with a lot of close-minded people being ignorant to what was really going on, Eazy-E and the group really told people exactly how it was and shed light on a lot of topics people never really cared about.

Mr. Universal, did you read this thread? I am guessing you did not, or you’d realize that that kind of “touch” is going to keep little children with internet nanny software away from this otherwise excellent internet forum. Please desist, and don’t post if you have nothing meaningful to contribute.

We all have to work together to keep this place beautiful. Carry on.

You tw*t.

I most certainly agree, Flobots are by far the best rappers I’ve heard yet.
They actually talk about crisis stuff that is going on in the world.
Not just that but none of anything they talk about is stuff about cars, money, or girls.
