Quote of the day (from non-riders)

Proof that unicyclists are not clowns

Well, a fair few are. Not me, I don’t have much of an aptitude for clowning (I admire those who do), but some of my friends are both professional clowns and very competent unicyclists.

Speaking of clowns - I got this one two days ago: „You looked like you made part of the circus, when I saw you the other day …riding the unicycle with such a large umbrella in your hand“.
It came from someone I know and wasn‘t meant in a negative way. But yeah, if you ride a unicycle in the rain you need a bigger umbrella than if you were walking in the rain; MORE SPEED!

I was riding with my uni, and a small kid, maybe 3YO, pointed at me and said something that sounded like “BIMMY! BIMMY! BIMMY! BIMMY!!!” I wonder what it means.

I think that’s toddler language for “Buy Me!” - they’re a future unicyclist!
(or maybe they’re already a toddler unicyclist but don’t yet have your wheel size  )

Maybe… But his dad was holding him back from running at me, so I don’t think he rides yet. But he may be inspired to start riding.

Maybe he was saying, “Gimmee, Gimmee, Gimmee!”, translated to “Give Me, Give Me, Give Me!”, or “I want that!” ?

Probably… after that he started doing the same to other people and things.

On my way home today (via Tallbike) ‘someone’ shouted at me, “You have too many wheels!”. That is a new one!

P.S. Hi @PedalSprell :waving_hand::rofl:

It is funny how easily recognizable you are on a tallbike

And I actually had to shout or I would never have caught up with you!!

As I was actually on a bike myself the exchange must have looked pretty weird

Not a specific quote but while riding today on a local urban bike trail I crossed paths with a young man on a one wheeled scooter. As he passed he made a comment, I’m not sure what he said but he turned around and rode a long with me for awhile asking questions about my 32” unicycle, he was impressed by the size of my wheel. He also asked where he could buy a unicycle, maybe a convert in the making.

Today I went to @Ulrik to borrow his 36er. On the way back into Oslo center I had several people comment on me riding a unicycle but of course I had no clue what they were saying since I don’t speak Norwegian. None of it sounded like ‘you’re missing a wheel’ though.

They probably said, “Look, it’s Erlend Loe!”

As some cyclists passed me today one yelled back, “You’re more talented than I am!” - I get that kind of call-out occasionally, it wasn’t the first time.

I would guess more of you have heard it, too. What have your answers been?

My go-to is, “No, I’m just more stubborn!”

I just tell them that everybody can learn to ride unicycle. We are all human.

Yesterday when practising freemounts on the UW36 and riding around a bit, there was this kid on a bike watching me continously and finally giving a thumbs up.

Last week after doing 250 metres and then finally hopping off, a passersby cyclist thought I had tumbled off and stopped his bike from the other side of the road to run towards me. There were trees along the road and I was just behind a tree when I hopped off. Of course the wheel just rolled onward without me on it.

Whenever someone comments on how they couldn’t do it, I just tell them to learn, and it’s worth the time cause it’s fun.

I always tell them it took me longer to learn to walk.

I was fooling around on my ultimate wheel in front of my house when group of maybe a dozen bikes came by. The group leader looked at me and said: “Ultimate Wheel! Nice!”

I was pretty shocked that anybody would know that.

It was a regular group ride that my partner knew about - it’s working on riding every mile of road in Atlanta - so she posted a question to them asking about who it was who knew about UWs, and he not only replied but posted a link to the The Unicycle Factory Documentary , and a shoutout to “my man Tommi Miller.”

Pretty impressive for a non-rider!

What do you do with your Ultimate Wheel and what size? Can you roll and stand still to balance? How far can you go?

I’m really bad! I tried to learn a few years ago, then threw it in the basement. I just brought it out a couple of weeks ago to give it another try.

It’s the UDC star-of-david 700C wheel, in blue. I can freemount it and wobble along in the downhill direction of my street for a few hundred feet. I can’t ride it back uphill, though, or do much of anything else.

I should give my 28” another try. I reckon that is about the same size as a 700C. We don’t calculate in that. It also has a star-of-david. A few months ago I also got the 24” UW, but the tire is a bit too thick and rubs my leg, so it kind acts as a brake.
