Quick Release

No, I don’t mean a wheel. Anyone ever used a quick release on a unicycle
saddle? I’ve seen them on bike seats but when I went into the shop the guy
(a unicycle rider himself) told me he couldn’t put a QR on the unicycle
because it “wouldn’t work”. ??? Is this because there is more weight on
the seat on a unicycle than on a bike seat? (I would assume some of the
weight is distributed to the handlebars.) Or is he wrong? I can’t see how
there would be SO much weight that SOME QR couldn’t handle it???

I woke up this morning and felt like a two-year-old. But there wasn’t one
around so I went back to sleep.

I have two DM Ringmasters (getting another this week) and both have QR
seats. The ring that clamps the frame seems to be a bit beefier than the
ones on bikes thoough, so you might have to get the QR bit from a unicycle
manufacturer (e.g. DM - www.unicycle.co.uk - they might let you buy one i
spose). But basic answer to your question - YES quick release can be
easily used on a unicycle seat.

Graham,

Im using a quick release on my united now. I use it (the unicycle)for
trials and light muni. The quick release works ok, but the seat tends to
come out of position and ends up twisted slightly. This doenst happen
often, but sometimes, and after a bad crash also. You just need to really
tighten the QR before you ride, or it will twist all the time. I think the
bennifits of a QR far out weigh the disadvantages. I lower the seat for
trials, and raise it up for distance rides (i can only afford one uni for
now). Its also handy when others want to ride the uni, and wont fit with
the current height.

The quick releases that come on a lot of low end unicycles aren’t that
good (like the ones that have the rubber coated lever.) But for about $8
U.S. you can get a half decent one that won’t twist on you during a crash.
Unfortunately, I’ve had a hard finding something more than “half” decent.
Can’t we get “whole” decent? I’ve heard Salsa makes really good ones, but
do they make them in 25.4mm? (25.4mm is a very common seat tube o.d. for
unis.) I’ve seen a couple other nice ones at a bike shop that were beefy
and really smooth, but they only came if you bought the whole bike. Does
anyone know where to get the good ones, and especially in 25.4mm since
that’s what I’m using now?

Chris Reeder

Thanks folks. I’ll see if I can rustle up a “whole decent” one. I’ve
decided to go for some shorter cranks for my Coker too. I have 175mm
(installed by the guy who owned it before me) and I need to go a little
bit speedier!

Most of our unicycles have quick release on the seat. Everything from a
$30 Salsa clamp on my Telford to much cheaper models on Miyatas, Monty,
etc. Haven’t had any problems with them at all.
