quick question...

im planning on climbing Mt Washington in New Hampshire this summer(i dont know
how many of you have heard of it), and i need some quick advice about the kind
of unicycle i should get. i already have a 20" and a 24", and im not going to
use either of them. i have it narrowed down to 2 different unicycles. the
pashley 26" and the semcycle 28". i also want to do some muni-ing(eventually),
so im kinda leaning towards the pashley, but i dont know if the sem would be
better for going up this particular mountain. it should also be noted that the
mountain has a paved road leading to the top, its about 8 miles long, and has a
13% incline. thanks for your time!

You will need a sticker for afterward, that says “This unicycle climbed Mt.
Washington”!

Sounds like you’re asking two questions here.

  1. Which should I use for a one-time ride up the paved road?
  2. Which is better as a MUni?

For riding up the mountain (or any long road trip), the 28" Semcycle will be
better because a bigger wheel will get you there with less work. Also the
Semcycle is lighter than the Pashley. As for crank length, this is probably a
personal choice that you will best determine through training.

For MUni (or Muni, in the case of a Pashley) the Pashley is a better choice.
It’s made as a Muni, where the Semcycle is a street unicycle with some
adaptations for the trails. The Pashley is stronger than an XL Semcycle.

yeah, i was just looking at the sems at unicyclesource, and the do make deluxe
28". my real concern though is money. if i could, id buy both the 28" and 26",
but unfortunately i cant. i might go with a 26", because i do want to get into
muni, and i think they pashley would be a good starting muni for me, and it
would be nice for going up Mt Washington. but my mind still isnt completely
made up yet.

RE: quick question…

Good luck on the climb–I’ve been up there in a car, and wanted to ride a bike
up it, but was told that cycles are forbidden on the road, except for one day a
year when there’s a race to the top. Is that when you’re going to do the ride?
As for uni model, just be sure you have pretty long cranks on whatever you ride
so that you have better leverage. Perhaps the person who rode the race to the
top of Mt. Diablo (is that right?) would have some pearls of wisdom for you.

hey John! that hurts! My offroad sem lux would run over any pashley that go in
its way( if i didnt control it it would probably really like to rip up the rider
with its odyssey pedals too: ) <MoNKeYSPaZ@aol.com> wrote in message

Re: quick question…

Ine thing to keep in mind is that I think Mt. Washinton is 13% AVERAGE grade. It
peaks around 18% I think.

Re: quick question…

Hi there,

Not sure about the one day a year or maybe it was that no one stopped me, but I
have ridden it on a bike. (yep those 2 wheel things). It was great fun and I
would recommend it although it was really cold on the top. Make sure you allow
for that in your packing.

Re: quick question…

Johnny,

I've owned and ridden both the Sem XL 26" and Pashley. In my opinion the
Pashley is a tougher unit. The Sem cycle XL came with 5" cranks and a
1.3" tire which is okay for street riding. The Pashley came with a 1.95
tire and 6" cranks. The Sem cycle XL doesn't have a very wide fork for a
bigger tire. Both had Viscount seats which I found a bit hard on the
crouch. The tire was not centered in the frame on the XL when I got it
so I needed to take out the wheel and shim one side with a piece of
0.030" aluminum to get the wheel centered in the frame. The other Sem
cycle I got later was okay though. If you're okay with the extra money,
get the Pashley I think you'll cover more terrain with it. The old style
Schwinn seat with a 12" inner tube is pretty comfortable if you don't
mind no handle to grab on the front. Ask John at UnicycleSource.com (1
800 unicycle) about your riding and get his input too. Good luck.

The Pashley is not a label-snob.

I may have been wrong, but I think you can only get a 28" in the Semcycle XL
variety. The deluxe Semcycles are much more robust!
