questions about camera lenses

Hey everyone.

I am interested in buying a Sony HDR-XR150 and an Opteka fish eye lens but the only problem is that I don’t know whether the lens will fit it or not. All of the terminology is confusing to me.
The lens on my current video camera says “F/3.0 : f = 7.27 mm” “PRECISION LENS”. What does all this mean?

I am looking at these lenses.

Which one of these fish eye lenses will fit…

-Sony HDR-XR150 (“Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® / 30mm”)
-my current video camera (Otek HD 720p camcorder, “F/3.0 : f = 7.27 mm” “PRECISION LENS”

One last thing about the fish eye lenses, what does it mean when it says .45x or .21x is that the zoom or size or…?

help appreciated

I bought this camera on the way to Uninats and its awesome, Definitely worth it.

I dont no anything about the lens though sorry.

Well first you have to make sure that there’s a threaded part on the inside of the lens casing, from the photos on that website it doesn’t look like your current one does but the sony one does.
Secondly, what you really need to know is the width of the lens - from a quick google, I can see that the sony camera has a 30mm lens - any of these should work.
As for the 0.40x etc, just go on google images and search for 0.40x fisheye or whatever to see some samples, otherwise there isn’t really a way to gauge how wide and bulgey it will be.

hey Brandon,
as Trevor said, the xr150 is a great camera! so anything with ‘sony’ written on it is worth the money.

i can’t make much sense of the numbers on your current video camera, but all you need to know is the diameter of the lens. the xr150e has a diameter of 30mm which means its best if you find a fisheye lens that has a 30mm diameter. most come with adapter rings anyway

as for the numbers like .21 or .45 all they mean is that, for example, you have a 50mm lens. you times .45 by 50 and you get 22.5. so your lens with have the same focal length as a 22.5mm lens.
let me know if you have trouble understanding it :stuck_out_tongue:

please correct me if i’m wrong guys

edit: just saw tim’s post and he’s pretty much spot on too

Yeah the sony is 30mm but I have a lot of other filters that are 49mm or something and i just bought a little adaptor thing for $5 off ebay so they fit but it does look a little funny because of its size. So im guessing you could get adaptors to fit a lot of filters/lens.

Yeah, my camera has a 40.5mm lens (wtf) so I bought a 40.5-52mm filter and now I can use lots of standard DSLR lenses. Feels good man, although the camera gets a bit front-heavy, lol.

My camera has this ring that screws around another circular thing that has a thread but the ring serves no purpose. Another thing is that I still don’t understand the 0.40x stuff. What do you mean by wide and bulgey? And what do you mean by see some samples? What does it do? Will a 30mm 0.40x and a 30mm 0.65x lens make a difference in any aspects?

:):):):)

yes!

Well, here’s a 0.40x sample:

Here’s a 0.65x sample:

Notice how the 0.40x is more distorted than the 0.65x? That’s what I mean by how bulgey it is. And as far as I know (i’m not an expert…) the lower the rating on it, the wider the picture will be i.e, the more surroundings you’ll get in the picture.
eg: here’s a photo that I took without any additional lens, and here’s one with my 0.40x fisheye from the same place. (sorry about the bad lighting, lol :stuck_out_tongue: )

Hope this helps
