Question: What Is Thanksgiving

Im Australian so I obviously dont know much about thanksgiving. For some reason i just started wondering what its all about? I know people have turkeys. But what is it celebrating? Why is it on the day its on? what day is it on? and just anything else about it? thanks. kbye

its an excuse to eat a lot of food.

hahahaha true.

if you are talking about the US holiday, it’s the day we celebrate the mythical celebration between the Pilgrims and the Indians, lo these many centuries ago.

We celebrate by stuffing ourselves with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, which often consists of turkey stuffed with bread/spices, mashed potatos, gravy made from the turkey juices, cranberries jellied or preserved, sweet potatoes/yams, and pumpkin pie for desert.

thanks but what day is it on and why that day?

it’s always on a Thursday near the end of November, because that’s the day it’s always been.

All the information you’d want to know. (plus some more that you could probably care less about)

And when you say Indians you mean Native Americans!

thanks

At a long-distant point in history, the first settlers in America’s total ineptitude meant they were starving to death. The local native tribe helped them out and they had a shared feast. The holiday essentially celebrates the one time the two cultures were able to get along well. They eat a bunch of “traditional foods”, which actually weren’t what were eaten, but which were later popularized and associated with the event. It’s a time to get together and have a big family dinner, presently; lots of getting together with friends and family over food.
