Sorry I’ve made “another cranklfip thread” but I’m having some problems with crankflips.
I’ve just started getting into street and now I’ve learnt to 180 uni-spin I figured crankflips were the next obvious trick to learn.
I’ve watched Shaun J’s tutorial and I’m practising zero plants ATM. The main problem I have is I suck at kicking the cranks round. I’ve practised an hour or so. What exactly should you do to kick the cranks round?
I put pressure on the front foot, then jump while trying to kick down while also jumping up. What usually happens is either I don’t jump high enough and sometimes the foot I’m kicking with stays on the pedal. The other thing that happens is I kick the cranks (still not very fast) but the uni usually goes out infront of me and I can’t jump high. O and the third thing that happens is I jump high but the cranks spin really slowly. I haven’t yet landed a zero plant because by the time I jump off, plant my foot on the ground then try to jump back on the cranks haven’t spun enough.
Anyway I’m mostly having trouble with the kick, exactly how should it be done?
accually, kevin mcmullin told me a few tricks…you should be putting pressure on the front pedal before you even leave the ground…and as soon as u jump raise your back foot just a second before you lift off…then SNAP back
So, I’ve got the zero plant, but I can’t seem to flip the wheel fast enough while still keeping it under me (like you would if you were just crankflipping w/ no plant)
I keep pressure on the front foot, and it gives enough spin for the plant, but I haven’t tried taking my back foot off really early as you suggest. I’ll try it tomorrow and see how it goes
I can tell you how I learned to crankflip. At first, I just kinda did rolling no footers, letting the wheel spin as much as it felt like spinning. I spent about a month (I think it was a month) riding around doing half-flips. The absolute most important thing about any trick that involves leaving the Uni is actually committing and landing back on. Just don’t even worry about the kick, let the cranks spin freely and just try to keep the uni under you and land back on at all costs. You will eventually get the feel for a good kick. The first full flip i landed was down a two stair…
But a half flip must be hard? Your feet land on opposite sides to what they left. I’d probably find it a bit hard to land back on the pedals doing a rolling no footer.
So did the kick just come naturally or did you have to really focus on kicking the cranks round when you were learning?
I just don’t have the snapping effect of it happening, either I jump high, and the cranks don’t spin, or I never get my kicking foot of the pedal or a jump low and quick them round with a bit of speed.
Lol one, you said earlier you only tried for an hour before posting, lol practice bro, took me so SO long to learn flips. I used to do those rolling no footers to do a regular full flip. But the only thing i can say about the kick itself, is to kick outwards, think of it kinda like a kickflip on a skateboard. SO kick down and outwards, and try putting hte tip of your foot on hte flipping pedal a lil more…
I’ve learnt crankflips through footplant crankflips. I’ve never got zero-plants down. I’ve been doing crankflips for a while now and I still cant’ do a zero-plant.
So, my method: do footplant crankflips on a bench or something, then do the proper crankflip. And it’s all about commiting yourself to land, like Peles said.
Yeah well my main goals ATM are 360 uni-spins, crankflips, wheel walk, one foot wheel walk and gliding. I also need to work on hopping.
But yeah I just went out and practised a bit more. Pushing outwards and down really helps. I don’t skate BTW :P. I think I pretty much have the kick sussed after that extra practise but I’m gonna skip zero plants coz I really need to learn to jump higher. I usually either do a high jump and a slow spin or a fast spin and a low jump.
I made a bit of a ledge outside so I guess it’s all practise now. BTW the ledge is a bit above pedal height, maybe 30-35cm. I guess I just need to practise now.
I can get almost 2 rotations of the cranks… The only problem is that when I kick with the ball of my foot, I tend to jump forward, leaving the unicycle behind my legs, and I cant return my feet to the pedals…
I can crankflip by pushing the cranks with my heel, but this interferes with doing them up curbs, as my foot hits the curb as I try to flip the cranks.
It is really hard for me to learn with the ball of my foot.
I cant stay over the unicycle, and when I do, then the cranks don’t flip at all.
Well, I tried lifting my back foot really early and putting alot of weight on the front pedal. It does help flip the cranks, but after trying a zero plant utilizing this method, I hurt my foot. Damn.
