I thought that doing statistics about the distance you walk everyday, how much you sleep and so on was another ridiculous fad.
Then my daughter offered me a Withings Pulse for Xmas… and now I am compiling statistics about distance, sleep, heart rate and so on …
Other people here going after such ridiculous fads ?
I am. Have done so since a really long time, long before the phrase Quantified Self was coined. In my “About me” on this site, I have included “useless data collection and analysis” as an interest, partly because of this.
two surprises for me:
- I walk more than I thought (56km each week at work, but 80 km/week while on vacation)
- my heart rate at rest in a sofa is varying wildly (between 49 and 77) …
That is actually normal - and a good sign really. In a state of relaxation your heart rate should vary quite a bit. If you’re stressed, anxious or exercising, your heart rate is more constant and usually higher. Google for Heartmath and HRV (Heart Rate Variability) and you should find more background.
update: according to my little spy I walked more than 2900 km in a year…
(just by walking to my office and back + around 10% unicycling during week-ends )
I didn’t realize I was walking that much … but now no more walk to my office (I retire!)
heart rate at rest vary still a lot (from 41 to 70 … most of the time between 50 and 60)… but if change is a sign of well being
If counting pedal rotations count, then count me in!
