progress update

this morning i looked at the skill levels…for skill level 1 i still need to gracefully dismount w/ unicycle in front, for skill level 2 i need to mount with left foot, and for skill level 3 i need to ride w/ seat on stomach for 10m.

i set out today to get at least one of these things done…

it just got dark, and i have now done something a bit unexpected–i spent the 4 hours i had for unicycling only practicing mounts(except for a bit of light trail riding) i ended up learning 4!! new mounts–rollback and static mount with my left foot, and the rolling mount with both feet!!

i must say, the rolling mount is the coolest looking and most fun mount yet, im just worried that i am going to forget how to do my other mounts

in other news, i still cant gracefully dismount with the unicycle in front, so i am still level 0 :frowning:

with all my mounting however, i have almost mounted with the seat on my stomach, its gunna be crazy if i can do all the level 3 skills without that blasted lvl1 skill

Re: progress update

Sounds like you are making good progress. You should remember, however,
that technically you didn’t learn four new mounts. The standard skills says
that using a different foot for the same mount doesn’t count as a different
mount. So if I understood you correctly you learned three new mounts

  1. rollback
  2. static
  3. rolling

I was curious to know if you found it easier to dismount in front of the unicycle while grabing the seat from behind. I found this to be a much more fluid motion than leting the unicycle outrun myself.:frowning:

easier? definately
somehow tho, it looks way better to step off the back and have the uni in front of u
i’ve never understood why this is requirement for skill level one
any suggestions?

My normal dismount is the uni to the back; however just recently I’ve been trying to finish with the uni to the front more often. It doesn’t shoot out behind you as much, and does look slower and more controlled. However you can’t (well, I can’t) do it quite so suddenly as jumping off the front.

Safety. You are far less likely to hit someone with your unicycle when
dismounting with it in front of you. Until I read the skills definitions I
alway dismounted with the uni in back. Now I find it equally easy (if not
easier) to dimount uni in front.

Having just returned from UNICON (what a wonderful experience!) I can say
how important it is to dismount with uni in front. Especially when you are
literally surrounded by other riders. A dismount with the wheel behind you
might just take out several other riders.

I totally agree with Michael. This is especially true when dismounting a giraffe.

Even that might be overstated. I was given to understand (by John
Foss, in this newsgroup) that the rollback mount and the static mount
count as (two variations on)) one single mount. Much to my displeasure
and non-understanding, I should add.

thanx for the input gents
one question
the comment about it being esp important when dismounting a giraffe
r u pulling my leg or should u really dismount with giraffe out front?
i know i’m setting myself up something chronic by asking like this, i’ve just never even considered the possibility

That IS serious. A giraffe wheel shoots out like a metre at least when
you dismount. Only if the wheel goes to the front you can check
beforehand that that there is enough space to do it safely.
