profile hub getting loose

Hey all,

After trashing my cranks on the Toad ride last week I’m now decided to go
bankrupt for a profile wheelset very soon.

I’d just like to make a quick poll here : how many profile hub users did
have the cranks getting loose ? And after which amount of time ?

Oli,

On my MUni my profiles have been “loose” for months now. It really isn’t
much of a problem- they just creak a bit but it doesn’t (in my opinion)
significantly affect the performance. Mine became creaky after about 4
months of really hard abuse and lots of big drops.

Mine are somewhat loose (always have been) and creak a little, usually
only on steep ground. I can feel the looseness slightly sometimes, and
should probably have complained and returned it all, but it’s such a
hassle. I’ve got the right spacers in - it appears to be that the
tolerances are very tight and the manufacturing just plain isn’t quite
accurate enough. As Kris says, it doesn’t really matter - you can still
ride and they don’t break.

Mine creak a bit, but I wouldn’t call them loose. From what everyone has
told me, if I greased them, they might not creak as much, but it hasn’t
bothered me enough to do anything about it. I haven’t heard any one
complain about looseness, other than the creaking. I can’t detect the
“looseness” physically, I can only “hear” it. I think the consensus is
that you live with the creaking in order to have a crankset that is
indestructible by most mortals.

It’s just creaky. -K. — Olivier Paugam <opaugam@aptilon.com> wrote:

I received my new Sem XLT with the Profile setup and by the second day the
creaking appeared. What confused me is that when I stepped off and rotated
the uni forward a bit, the creaking continued for a moment without any
weight on the pedals. Made me wonder if it was indeed the cranks. Mark at
Unicycle.com assured me that the creaking in the Profile setup was normal
so, with that, I won’t worry about it further. I haven’t noticed any
feeling of looseness. I’ll keep my eye on it though.

I guess I meant to say Sem XLW, not XLT. Wonder what XLT could stand for?

Maybe you should also check how tight your bearing clamps are. Over-tight
bearing clamps make your bearings creak.

Thanks, Kris. I’ll check it out. BTW, we’ve had a couple of our club kid’s
uni’s come from bicycle shops. It seems that bicycle mechanics are
notorious for cranking down on nuts and bolts. I’ve had to adjust one or
two of the bearing clamps on their new uni’s. It sure pays to spin the
wheel up in the air before putting rubber on the road.

I’ve riden Profile cranks for years, my 175mm on my bike make the same noise. We use to have some name for it, but I’ve since forgot.
