Pretty serious 5' giraffe injuries.....

Well, What can i say? Today some thing happened that i feel quite guilty
about…

Well, at my house today a friend, (one of my few “unidudes”[the best of
them{excluding me}i think]) Nick, and i were kinda messing around…on
unis…and we take a break to hydrate, and well we come back and i
suggest he tries to ride my 5’ savage giraffe. He was enthusiastic about
it, so i sho whim how to mount(leaning againts a wall mount) and i let
him try. After acouple tries he has mounted. He’s haning on to my garage
door frame an kinda sitting there; so i coax(sic?) him to try to ride
away. He goes about 3 feet and then falls of backwards, landing on his
feet(pretty standard landing). I attribute his lack of progress to the
slope of my driveway. He’s about to give up. But i convince him to try
ONE more time. So we go down to the street, and while me and (another)
friend brace the uni, he mounts, wobbly, but he mounts. Then me and my
friend remove our support and he’s leaning on my trash can. I tell him to
straighten out, but he says he can ride it. So i let him struggle with
the can to get balanced.

Then…

He pushes off, ans starts pedaling… (it looks like he’s gonna do fine)

And i notice he’s leaning too much and i figure he’ll just fall off…

Well, he falls to the left side, and puts his left foot down to break the
fall(naturally) BUT(!), his right side stays on the uni, so that when he
lands hid foot stays level with the ground but his claf moves perpendiular
to it…Yes, ouch indeed. At first it doesn’t look so bad, like a
sprain or something…but 5 mabye 10 minutes go by and it swells up
REALLY big and nick gets faint. I try to sit him down but im so weak(arms)
that i fall with him; i broke his fall luckily.he seems ok for a sec and i
run to get him a cool drink and he seems ok then we try to move him up to
the house(were pretty mch being human crutches) and half way up he get
faint adn passes out(for about 10 sec.) in my arms and i drag him to the
grass…well ANYWAY i get mom, ice and her keys and we made a call to
his dad…blah, blah, blah…well we go to the hospital…and we
(“we” being me nick and the docs)think its a fracture on the growth
plate…not good. but we’re not sure, but they casted it and im waiting to
see him at school tomorow.

So to recap: I feel kinda guilty about coaxing a friend into riding my 5’
giraffe which he then fell off and (presumeably) broke his ankle… So
i guess, thats it…what do you think?Ever had a similar incident occur?

No, but it could have happened to anyone  He’ll be fine in a few months
or sooner. Don’t sweat it.

I was giving this lesson on stilts once - the type that strap to your legs
instead of you holding on with your hands. For those that don’t know, they
are REALLY dangerous as if you start falling, you can’t just jump off -
you go down and I mean down.

So this guy was walking around on them, and I was on one side, and another
guy was on the other, and my friend decided to see how fast he could go.
So fast that we couldn’t keep up with him…

Fortunately he was walking on the grass…

Yep, I’m afraid I can relate. I was mucking around free mounting a 7ft
giraffe and being a bit too blaise about it. Fell off sideways and didn’t
twist around so I came down very hard on my left ankle while the rest of
me was still on the giraffe. Folded it rather nicely and couldn’t put any
weight on it at all.

I put lots of ice on it over the next 24 hrs but was still unable to use
it for about 6 weeks. (Over Christmas too :frowning:

It was incredibly difficult to restrain myself from riding. I ended up
juggling an awful lot.

Exactly a year later I was attempting to ride down a crater on my Muni
(See http://www.juggle.co.nz/uni31mar/uni31mar.html ) and managed to fold
both my ankles. Another Christmas spent hobbling about.

Interestingly enough it is much easier to ride a unicycle than it is to
walk when your ankles are sprained. This is because most of you weight is
supported on the seat. The only problem is mounting and dismounting are
rather painful (and a fall is catastrophic).

And don’t ask how I know this

Unrelated to unicycling, though related, I had a similarly embarrassing
moment which I too will offer in Haiku (or thereabouts):

=46rom across the party
A pretty face diverts my attention Slipped on a canap=E9

A good wounding is always useful for the ego as they tend to get out of
hand otherwise.

But somewhat on the topic, I have been warned away =

from trying to free mount my 5’ Giraffe (perhaps because I’m 40?) because
it is too dangerous. But this came =

from someone who does MUni.

I can vouch for this too!

As far as giraffe injuries go, I was holding some peanuts at the zoo and
… (just kidding)

Actually, I have had three memorable unplanned dismounts from a Giraffe.

  1. Haiku form:
    From across the street
    Cheers divert my attention
    Hit a canopy

Incidentally, I hit the canopy with my face but grabbed it and managed NOT
to fall backwards, which would have hurt even more. My ego had to be
splinted and was on bed rest for a few days, but I was ok.

  1. Lost my balance on a small slope and had the Giraffe slip out in front,
so I fell onto my back. This was the last day I rode for about 16 years.

  2. Recently I learned how to jump-mount the thing (it’s 6’ high, which is
far harder to jump-mount than a 5’ uni). On my first ever successful
mount, I learned never to wear boxer shorts while jum-mounting a Giraffe.

Does amputating a 5 year olds finger beat a broken leg? The neighbor kid
stuck his finger in the sprocket of my 5’ giraffe and loped it off at the
bottom of the nail. (suprisingly …, he didn’t cry ) It took us an hour to
find the finger and they sewed it back on. Now we’re just waiting to see
if it grows back on.
