Preparing for the Big Storm?

I will be watching from my cushy fireside seat while all the lower 48 East Coasters, including my family, perhaps get pummeled from the now dubbed Frankenstorm. I was wondering how everyone was going to prepare for the storm and the potential aftermath. Pre storm surfing? Cocktails? Last ride before the snow or torrential rains? mad rushes to Stop n Shop? do they still have those in CT?

Good Luck.

It’s time you realized how TV news dramatizes in order to keep you viewing.

Billy,
I guess saying I would be “watching” was a bit misleading as i don’t have a TV. I will just be getting updates from my family members stretching from florida to VT. I agree, the media loves pushing the hype to get viewers.

No TV :astonished:

I had no idea there was an Amish community in Alaska!

there isn’t any time for that kind of nonsense. if we aren’t out hunting moose or bears we are keeping our eyes on the russians. they are very sneaky.

LOL. Yes, watch out for those Russkies! (and Russkaya, too!)

We have black bears come into our yard almost daily (here in northern New Jersey). The area is seriously overpopulated with them. A bear cub was hit by a car right in front of our house. They are a nuisance and we are not allowed to hunt them. One day I’m going to walk out my back door and surprise one. Or get between mother and cub. It’s not like I carry my Counter Assault bear spray at all times.

I, too, do not have a TV. Not since around 2002. Lately, though, I have been selectively watching TV show episodes on Netflix.

So… you don’t have to worry about Hurricane Sandy. But I’m sure you have your own “interesting” weather conditions to contend with at times.

I’ll gladly take the occasional possibility of a Frankenstorm over a guaranteed Fairbanks arctic winter every year.

That’s because there’s not a TV show about it. Alaska is only full of gold miners, State Troopers and Ice Road Truckers. And George & Kris Peck.

Billy, same here, but I’m sure you’re not suprised

I raised my kids without TV, video games, or junk food.

They do use social media and eat poorly away from home, but it’s much more tempered than their peers, which was our primary goal since you can’t make your kids do anything

As to the storm…

We’re expecting high winds and some snow in the Smokies, otherwise we’re so far in land that it’s no big deal. I wanted to go for a ride, but I don’t fancy riding a big wheel in high winds.

My wife just got back from visiting a friend in Virginia Beach, their house is on an estuary, so they’re expecting high water, but they have not been evacuated.

The media does tend to pump things up, talking about storms as though they were alive. It reminds of that movie about the Tornado, can’t remember the name, but the producers clearly wanted the audience to get the sense that the Tornado was evil and that it was cognizant.

Experts agree this is God’s way of punishing swing states for even THINKING of voting for Romney;)

Against my wife’s protests, I went out on my 36" with my dog on leash. I had to stay on the roads and sidewalks, since they closed the parks due to falling branches and stuff at 5 pm last night.

I outride and dodge falling branches:D, but they have cops at the entrance.

interesting weather yes, but it is getting more tame. not one day below -50 at my house last year. we usually see at least a few and one or two down toward -60. this year so far have seen -14, it is back up to the positives and we are getting snow today. only 2 or 3" . The best winter temp up here is -10. nice and dry and the trails, when set up are great for riding/running. Not to mention it is a great temp for mushing.

Personally haven’t owned or lived in a house with a TV since 95. Connections are too slow were i live to stream movies. we just get them delivered through netflix. Ben, you can use my mom’s excuse for not having any games, like early atari and pong: it will break the TV.

Uni57, not to worried about bears. have seen a few in the neighborhood but it is the moose that are worrisome at times. Usually the dogs alert us to their presence. have only been charged once on the property. They are great to watch from the porch as they drive the dogs nuts, they know just how close to get to the dogs and browse as if the dogs aren’t even there.

Stay inside and guard yourselves from that Evil storm and zombies. Don’t forget to Double Tap.

Cardio, it goes without saying, but the double tap…I mean come on guys, it’s a zombie for goodness sake, have you not seen what happens when they supporting characters look away?

Mmmmm, brains…

So there’s a hurricane (dubbed “Frankenstorm”) rapidly approaching land at roughly 30mph, pushing floodwaters along the East Coast, supposed to last for days and coming sooner than expected, with ridiculously strong winds and as much as 12 inches of rain water in some places, with a storm surge as high as 12 feet?

So what does this mean for my unicycling?

Is anyone building an ark?

you will be under water in a few years, as the icebergs melt.

Move to high ground!

I’ll be under the black spruce swamp in a few years, so not as worried about the rising seas. My house is sinking as the permafrost in the area melts out. Its Ok though, when it sinks into the swamp, i will build on top of it, and when that one sinks I will build on top of that one.

Swampy trails is the reason winter is so nice up here. opens up hundreds of miles to winter sports. The Oregon saw some mileage last winter.

Same here. Who needs the rubbish?

Door Number One: You’re next gear purchase should be waterproof and float.
Door Number Two: Take your next vacation in Utah.
Door Number Three: Consider taking up knitting
Door Number Four: It’s all a dream, you’ll wake tomorrow and it’ll be Summer

Here in mid ohio we have a rain snow mix right now with high winds. when i left for school thismoring it was snowing sideways

Climate change is here, and we’re not prepared.

If you’re serious about it, and you live in a house at sea level… you’re not serious about it.
