Update on the Sun XL,
I got the hub welded by a local welder a little over a week ago. Didn’t get many detailed pictures before I painted it. (Both pics are on the same flange)
 
Afterwards I threw on a few layers of spray paint. I was going to do just solid blue, but I figured I would go with black flanges since I got some purple spokes to rebuild the wheel with.
I think it was the right decision to go with the black flanges since it makes the spokes pop out a little more at the hub 🤠
And here it is, all put back together!
I’ve been able to idle on it and ride around without any issues so far, so I’m _cautiously_ optimistic that the hub slippage issue is fixed. I’ll be riding it more for the next few days, so I’ll see how that goes

Yeah they aren’t the prettiest welds 🫣 I didn’t have many options for welders to choose from in my town; most of them are focused on bigger projects or specialized to certain applications. But as long as the hub stays in one piece, it’s good enough for me. If the welds do fail though I’ll probably go through a different welder or just source a new hub

BTW a frankentire refers to two or more tires that have been sewn together. Also theres a reason why aluminum rims are pinned together and not welded but I have an extra bit of rim I was going to use anyway so it’s all working out except that I have to do it on breaks at work

You could make yourself a 34" rim with a matching tyre! Faster than the new breed of 32ers but not as bulky or heavy as a 36er. I think that could be the sweetest of all sweet spots! Maybe the b!ke industry would follow suit 😉

We got ourselves a 43.25" rim, with a tire it will be about 46.5" shown here with leftover rim and the Chaoyang 36" and a normal 29"

Just a very pretty unicycle here.
It’s a 32 incher built around a Jakob Flansberry aluminum frame. You can see from the Go Fast and Va Vite, that it’s Quebecoise. The wheel is a Nextie carbon rim with Kris Holm hub and cranks. The seat is a Mad4One. It’s super light and fun to ride!

I’ve just finished building mine too.
27.5” , qu-ax 32h hub, raceface arc 35 rim, qu-ax eleven saddle, polished qu-ax seat clamp, shimano saint brake with caliper polished and resin pistons fitted.
I might sell it before I get attached to it as I have too many unicycles!!

I’m making g a frame from UDC aluminum 42mm bearing cups, this is my first good practical aluminum welding the first one I ran out of gas without realizing and my coworker tried to finish it for me without realizing the gas was empty after replacing it he did finish it. But the second better looking weld is mine after having enough gas. From the top to bearing center is 24" (can fit up to 48" wheel but that might change with the frame cap) the pipe I’m using is stuff that we have no use for at work due to a customer that backed out, it is incredibly strong and light weight, one leg weighs roughly the same as the 42x24mm bearing shown

Aluminum is rough to weld. You think you have it heating up and then all of a sudden you just get a big melt puddle. You have to clean the heck out of everything. Can’t even reuse your brushes between steel and aluminum.

Tacking aluminum has always been the hardest part for me but other than that id say I have loose handle on it. But I do have the best teacher
