pop or soda

as Bugman said, in the South it’s all called coke…doesn’t matter if you want a Pepsi, a Sun Drop, or a Cheerwine you still call it Coke…

anybody who says Pop or Soda is an obvious carpet-bagger

My wife calls it “The Elixir of Life”. My kid wont drink it at all.

Garrison, Montana.

LÄSK

having lived in a few places here’s my list

outside of Atlanta, GA = coke. everything. people ask what kinda coke do you want?
Huntsville, AL = coke, but soda is acceptable
Ames, Iowa = pop, people look at you funny if you say “coke” for a non-coke and soda just means you’re from somewhere else.

It’s pop in Minnesota!

New Jersey, USA - Soda

(it must be a geographical thing, because New Jersey’s neighbors New York and Pennsylvania also call it soda)

Personally, I call it paint remover. I never touch the stuff. But I digress.

Yea Washington is definatly a pop state. Can’t recall the last time I heard someone call it soda…

Not western PA, us Yinser’s call it Pop. I normally just say what I want to drink if its a Coke, Sprite, Screwdriver, Guinness, or Bass Ale. If you ask for stuff by name you know what to expect and are never dissapointed. Thats the brilliance of a society that corperations run.

Up here and in Philly it is wholly Soda. Asking for anything else will get you deported to Canada…

Oregon’s already been covered.

But in Campinas, Brazil, they call the colas Coca and they call the fruity drinks Guarana (guarana is the equivalent soft drink to America’s Root Beer in terms of popularity).
The actual term is for carbonated soft drinks is ‘refrigerante’ (hay-FRIDGE-er-ahnch). And I’m not making that up!

This is presumably due to the invention of the beverage in the South, in Atlanta in 1886. Coca-Cola was not the first carbonated beverage, but it was the one that got famous. Everyone else is an imitator. I believe it is this history, combined with pride in such a successful southern company, that led to the generic term of Coke for all soft drinks.

“I’d like a Pepsi Coke please.”

In case Michigan has not been covered, it’s pop there.

In Germany, soft drinks are called “limonade.” Sounds like lemonade…

Also Nova Scotia, Canada, and its pop. My cousins in Ontario call it pop too.

David

Edit: In PEI they call it pop and its illegal to sell it in cans or plastic bottles, they sell it in glass bottles all sizes. The deposit is like 40 cents.

John now don’t forget that Pepsi is a Southern Invention too!! Crafted in New Bern, NC

Yet we still call all soda’s Coke, not Pepsi in NC

Mostly it’s pop here in Oregon. But I’ll call it soda on occasiong. ---- Oregon U.S.A.

That’s because Pepsi was invented to cash in on the success of the Coke that was already out there. And though the Coca-Cola company is still based in Atlanta, Pepsico is in Purchase, New York.

It’s pop… soda is carbonated water, but I’m from BC. I was reading the newspaper a few days back, and there was a headline that read: “Deer Pizzle exports to China Fizzle” so I dont know how seriously you can take us.

Isn’t Pop a kind of music? And soda is for an upset stomach.
