POLL: A ______ of unicyclists

The purpose of this poll is to find the perfereable term for a group of unicyclists.

To post a poll, we need to narrow the field down to 10 choices. Most of the 40 ideas were originally posted in this thread:

http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=27909&highlight=wobble

If you’d like to help decide which 10 get into the ‘final’ poll, please pick your favorite three from the list below in a reply to this thread. In a week or so, when everyone who may be interested has had the opportunity to post, I will put the top ten from this list into a more official poll!

Thanks, Here is the list.

Collective group of unicyclists

What about a “cluster” or a “faction”.

Out of your list I prefer “gang”.

Gives us some menace!

My top three favorites:

  1. Wobble

and then at a distant second and third:

  1. Balance
  2. Trundling (this one makes no sense but it’s a fun word)

Re: POLL: A ______ of unicyclists

i don’t mean to complicate the issue any more than is neccesary (and thank u for getting this poll together)
this does not take into account the pretty well-supported suggestion that we have different collective nouns for (EG)
Cokers
Munis
Trails
Freestyle
UniHoki

i think if we can get one ‘main’ one down viw this kind of exercise, we can look at the individual ‘classes’ later?

I like
“A balance of unicyclists”

I vaguely remember seeing another tread covering this subject a while ago but I couldn’t find it.

Re: Re: POLL: A ______ of unicyclists

I thought about doing something like this, but whittling 40+ to 10 was complicated enough for one thread!

I think what you suggest is a very good good idea since there is a distinct range of public appearance between say a group unicycling clowns humoring a crowd and a throng of munists barelling down a mountiain side! They need different words.

Like sharks. I don’t know if they ever go in schools or a solitary, but there is a word, [b]frenzy,[b/] that describe a specific shark activity that occurs in groups.

Thanks, Gild!

posse

balance

spin (not spinning)

wobble

it’s been bugging me since i missed the edit window
it’s meant to be ‘via’

flock
union

a cult of unicyclists

I think we should honor our forum creator and say a “Gilby” of Unicyclists. Only if he approves of it though.

Wobble

Wobble

Uniers get it.

Even muggles understand.

that’s a good point…if we say a ‘weekend of unicyclists’ to a muggle, then they’ll just say, “double-yoo tee eff?” but a wobble, now, that one makes sense.

I don’t like wobble that much because it refers to unicyclists who are a bit unbalanced or wobbly…But most decent unicyclists don’t really wobble. If we choose wobble, it makes more sense to muggles but doesn’t mean much to a unicyclist.

I like balance.
I like words like union, unit or unity because it loosely refers to a one-ness that goes well with unicycle, being a one-wheeler and all…

i’m with denali on ‘Balance’
it is after all what we strive for
‘Wobble’ might be more descriptive of our learning-to-ride phase but for a general term, i’d prefer if it was aspirational rather than just descriptive

if we go for ‘A Wobble of Unicyclists’ because it will make more sense to an average member of the public, we might as well go for ‘A Circus of Unicyclists’
using, and indeed (as a community) endorsing the use of ‘Wobble’ as a collective noun for unicyclists will simply buy right into the (heavily disputed) misconception of a unicycle as a ‘Clown-B*ke’ and it’s widespread use will put the perception of the sport back 20 years

think about it this way, when u engage in even the briefest post-‘hey-u-lost-a-wheel’ conversation with a member of the public, one of the first things they always say is something along the lines of ‘u must have an incredible sense of balance to ride that thing’
they don’t say ‘hey, u wobble a lot on that thing’

A Balance of Unicyclists

it has a certain gracefull charm about it

It would be nice to have a word of French origin similar to peloton.

The word peloton originates from a word meaning a tight rolled up ball and refers to the tight pack of bicyclists in a road race. Unicycles don’t ride in a tight pack. It’s not safe and we don’t go fast enough to gain any advantages from drafting in such a tight pack. Maybe a French word deriving from something meaning a sparse pack or loose ball.

kewl idea
i’ll PM wobblingbear
(mmm, there’s a word for that, isn’t there…?)
