POLARIS in the USA WITH MUNI's!

Anyone Stateside who has only been able to read about competitive Muni events
like the POLARIS and other trail quest derivatives, Things are set to change.
POLARIS have now agreed a US franchise for the American version of the
competition we know and love.

Contact: The Himalayan Group, Inc, Speak to; Doug Hosler (Head Sherpa?) phone
(615) 599-5915 himalayangroup@worldnet.att.net Doug is based in Franklin TN
37064 - Is that a grid reference?, ‘cos us lot use 6 figures!

NOTE Our (UK) approach to the event is historically that of predator -How many
Mountain Bike teams can you beat and Humiliate on Muni’s, 30% of field is good,
but can you do better? Just don’t go over the 7hours (day1) and 5hours (day2)
and get as many checkpoints as you can, that’s all there is to
it. Happy Hunting!

Actually I forgot about the team gear for 24hrs, ultralight camping, but I’m
sure you guys will cope.

Tell him I sent you, to put a REAL challenge into the event.

Duncan.

Wow, this sounds very interesting. I’d love to try this and agree exactly with
your ‘approach’! Unforunately Tennesse is far from California, but I’ll write to
the guy and see what he’s planning.

PS 37064 is a US zip code (post code to you). They have 5 digits and also a 9
digit version that is accurate down to a few houses.

Okay, I'll ask. WHAT'S the "Polaris" exactly? I mean, it's obviously
something MUniish, but what are the details? -UniC

Re: POLARIS in the USA WITH MUNI’s!

FYI, I wrote to Doug, and they are considering an event in 2000 around Point
Reyes, California. This is about an hour north of San Francisco. He said they’re
just looking at maps now, and that they are looking for a local coordinator.
Also, the location is far from settled on. Here are some links I found:

1996 event: http://www.unicycling.org/unicycling/tales/polaris/polaris96.html A
write up of the 1995 event (you have to read this)

Poalris MTB challenge events are two day MTB orieenteering competions sponsored
by the Polaris outdoor gear company, over here in the Uk the name Polaris is
sinonimous with the two day MTB event. Broadly the rules go

Carrying at least your minimum team kit you plan and cycle a route past as many
checkpoints as you can with in the time allowed. These checkpoints have point
values so you try to plan a route that will get you most possible points. If
your late finishing you lose points according to how late you are. Teams are
normally of two people, however summer events may allow teams of one person.

minimum team kit is stuff like repair kit, emergency first aid kit, food,
camping gear, waterproofs. The campsites are pretty basic. teams can be mixed or
single sex, different catogaries are formed for veterns / youth etc if there are
enough teams to make it worth doing. Unicycles in the UK just muck in with what
ever catorgary the team fit, mixed/ men/ women etc. So you compete directly
agaist the two wheelers, trying not to come last, it hasn’t happened yet.

Try it you migt like it, but get a copy of the US rules first, and follow them,
otherwise you get disqualified. The MTBers camping next to us at this summers
event got disqualified for riding on a footpath, they were not to happy when
they found out in the evening.

That last one is interesting, they got the same number of points as we did one
the first day, although they lost over 7000 points, we lost 4 and got more
points overall. Good write up from a bikes point of view. I hope that there will
be some Muni input into the US event, it really is fun (well I can say that now
it is over).
