so i crashed my unicycle into some brush on friday and it turns out there was poison oak in there. does anyone have any home remedies to heal it quickly? i heard baking soda and rubbing alcohol are both good. i also heard you can mix half water and half bleach but that seems unhealthy to me. help
I heard youāre mum is good.
i tried that already but to no avail.
Now you both have poison oak, good work.
I crashed into black berries the other day and my buddy had to pull me out. That was not so much fun.
Nothing worked for me. Tried the bleach, which was gross. Tried baking soda, which is messy but cuts down on the itching while it lasts.
The best cure is to stay away from the stuff, but it grows along the edges of some of the best trails around here, and Iām highly sensitive! This year my approach is to do lots of road riding (RTL training), which keeps me away from the damn P.O.
Antihistamines seem to be the best treatment, though they only focus on the itching and donāt help the stuff go away, other than to keep you from messing with it. And thatās the most important thing about Poison Oak, donāt touch it! Itās insidious. It wants you to. The better you can leave it alone, the quicker youāll be rid of it. Believe me, Iām an āexpert.ā
Teqnue anti oil poison oak remedy.
Having the correct spelling helps:

This is a new(?) product, and Iām going to have to get some. Itās not a question of whether Iāll get it again, but when, so might as well. The well-known Tecnu product for āearly preventionā is something Iāve had around for years, but sometimes I donāt have it with me or donāt use it in time. It can clean off the nasty oil before it infects you, but once it gets in there the product canāt do much. Thatās why I didnāt mention it before.
But for the moment, this looks like a new approach to helping, as well as offering some more advice for treatment on that page.
so i woke up just now and i have more of the freakin stuff! i didnāt think there was poison oak in the brush i fell in but looking back i think there was a TON of it and i just didnt recognize it for some reason.
I love being immune to the stuff Have fun!
donāt we feel special. lol
I never had poison oak but had poison ivy and I found the best itch relief came from running hot water over the area in the shower for a few minutes. I had it very bad on my legs and nothing worked as good as that. But it canāt be so hot that it scalds the skin, especially because the skin is already damaged withthe ivy.
Itās weird because apparently the heat drives the histamines crazy and they all release at once making the area insanely itchy for a few minutes, but then it stops and the itch doesnāt come back for 5 or 6 hours, because all the histamines are depleted. I donāt know the science, but it sure worked best for me.
I made the mistake of following someoneās advice of using water āas hot as you can stand itā and burned myself. After that I used really really warm water, until you feel the super itch starting. When the itching stopsā¦ job done. Donāt use a hair dryer, theyāre way too hot on the hot setting, and too cool on the low setting.
There must be stuff on the internet about it.
Disclaimer: As with anything, consult your physician before starting this treatment regimen.
so i just made a paste using oatmeal, baking soda, and a little bit of salt by uting it all in the blender with a little warm water. i then used plastic wrap to wrap my legs after applying the paste. ill post how it turned out.
These pastes might work better if you think about why they work. Baking soda works because the itch oil is acidic (or so Iāve been told) and the baking soda helps neutralize it. Iām not sure why adding in oatmeal and salt would help, nor do I think neutralizing it this late in the game will help either.
oatmeal is supposed to help with the itch and the salt and the baking soda are supposed to dry it up. oh and the paste i made is really helping.
so my cure is the best thing i have ever tried. it even tops store bought stuff!
Good work!
Got it for the very first time! must have touched a shrub with my gloves and when I rubbed my nose and that was it! 48 hours later I have a nasty little blister right where I had rubbed it, and itās starting to itch. I have to go buy some tecnu today and wash EVERYTHING!
I read some interesting facts about poison oak, like: ā1/4 ounce of urushiol (substance that causes the rash) is all that is needed to cause a rash in every person on earthā
Cross-posting makes baby Jesus cry. For shame, Terry.
Wha? I thought it was good to bring back older threads and add your own to it.
Wait a minute. You just cross-posted your response to his post. I think this is the on-topic one, so I wonāt post in the other one, which is about (supposed) poison oak cures. Good luck with that, BTWā¦
