PNG Portable Network Graphic, the graphic standard in the internet for all
not photo graphics.

Compresses better than the obsolet GIF format which was a long time ago
the graphic standard

Why in the WORLD do you say the .gif is obsolete? How many websites do you
see out there ‘trying’ to use animated .pngs?

It may compress better than a .gif or .jpg but it’s got a long way to go
before it will replace the .gif

Animations are the only remaining usage of GIF

I have on my new sites only the English/US German/Austria Flags as GIF,
because they are animated. No other use for GIF.

I have some semi-transparent MOVING GIF images on my site.
Semi-transparent meaning that the GIF lets SOME of the under graphic show
though…but not all.

My understanding is that PNG will do these types of effects but I
personally don’t have graphic software that supports that yet.

Well I was at a web-site. They had the .png graphic files. I tried =
looking at them, but when ever I clicked on them, all that showed was
a = black square where the picture is supposed to be.

Do I need a special plug-in or something. I am using IE 5.5 . They were =
only showing up as black squares. Can someone explain?

I would suggest that you do a search on PNG and see what you find.

Assuming the page designer used the standard IMG tag (instead of the
plugin thing some people used before any browsers supported it), IE 5.5
should have been able to show it just fine.

MNG (Moving Network Graphic, I think) is the PNG equivilant of Gif89a
(animated GIFs).

The PNG file format supports full 24-bit alpha transparency but Netscape
4., IE, and Photoshop don’t fully support the transparency yet so its
doesn’t do much good. (Mozilla and the next IE will though).
