Plea to Harper

Harper, that unicycle is an amazing achievement. Of course, we all want to
try it. But here is my proposal.

There are only a few of us who regularly ride Cokers over 100 miles a
week. I thought it might be a good idea (if you want some beta testing) to
have one or some of us give your epi (Harpooni) a whirl for a week or so.
I know offhand that Mark “Cokerhead” and I regularly ride this amount, if
not more. There are a few others who do likewise.

So, uh, please, would you consider loaning it out so we can give you
second and third opinions?

Well, it was worth a try!

See you at th UNICON!

Sure. I was thinking about letting Chris and Lewis try it out in Jackson if they wanted to. I don’t think it would cost that much to ship it around and there is lots of time before July as long as it doesn’t get out of hand. At this point, finding out who is interested is important to me as well as finding out how to make improvements and streamline manufacturing. If I find out that most serious Coker riders think that it rides like a pig I’ve learned alot.

Harper,

You are a fantastic individual, what a generous offer! I am astounded, personally. Think of the labor and love, and the fact that it is one-of-a-kind. What if the unthinkable happened and it got lost?

Well, thank you. I have ridden Chris’ Coker all of 300 or 400 feet, and not in a row. Chris, however, may want to give it a go. Don’t worry about me. I am hoping to make UNIcon this year anyway … Chris and I may drive up.

I’ll let Chris speak for himself.

Thanks a billion for the offer. Wow. What else can a guy say?

Lewis

I’d love to give a go! Try it out while commuting to class. I’m sure many others in TCUC would like to try it too.

Hey- I’v still got keyboard marks in my forehead from the first time he mentioned the possability! Today I added most of the number keys, and you can make out the page controll keys where they overlap the right side function key imprint from my last fainting spell.

Being an inovator is cool. Being a consistantly possitive presence makes you a cornerstone in the community.

While it kills me to say so: I say keep a lid on it tell the Uni-Mega (the Con, Man, the big Con…). I’d like to meet most of the folks who keep my head screwed on straight, and this delighfull contraption will bring 'em out of the woodwork.

Christopher

Hey, Gilby-

I rode it today wearing one of your unicycle tee-shirts. That’s why I went so fast. So it looks like I should build a reusable crate that offers plenty of protection and allows it to be packed and shipped without too much hassle. I would ship it with no seat and people could put on what they want. Any cranks that go on must be aluminum. No hopping, trials riding…this is a road vehicle so far. It’s easy to take off the wheel so different tires can be tried. I would ship it with the Kenda which is as big as it will handle. And it should follow the weather, the deep south boys should get it first and it could migrate north from there.

wow, such generosity really renews my belief in man’s true goodness.

I’m down here in Florida, where do I stand in line at? Hopefully I can see you guys at the big cheese meet.

So does this mean you’re planning on making more? Maybe your next one
should be geared 2:1! Laced on a 20" rim with a quick release seat post
you could have an awesome, speedy commuter cycle that is easily stored in
tight spaces.

Thanks for the great work,
Jeff

Re: Re: Plea to Harper

Let’s see how many are interested and where they’re located. Where are you located? Like I said, it could be shipped around as long as the number of stops it makes is reasonable.

I might like to make one that can be easily manufactured and perhaps mass produced. I would also like to make one that can be easily shifted when not in motion (static shift) The 2:1 ratio is complicated because it requires compound gears in a planetary system. In a simple gear system, the ratio approaches 2:1 as the sun gear diameter approaches the ring gear diameter and the planet gear diameter approaches zero. I don’t think I can buy those off the shelf.

I’m in Pennsylvania, somewhat in the area of Philly. I will not be able
to make it to the conventions so riding it there is not an option. I
totally understand if you don’t feel like having it sent here. Hey, if
the offer is still good I would wait until after Unicon and NUC :-D!!!

Oh, okay. Even a 20" geared to 30 would be fast enough!

Re: Plea to Harper

We could “Pony Express” it across the country instead of shipping it. I’d
drive a couple hundred miles in different directions to see it and meet
neighboring unicyclists. Maybe send a travel log or diary with it. Who’s
got the database?
