It was a Kovachi-built wheel, Sun CR18 rim, 36-hole, with the 29x2.1
NanoRaptor tire.
I was going down a steep section, not quite a drop but too steep to go
slowly on. The total height was maybe 3 or 4 feet, but there was a
little bit of a ledge about halfway down. I tried to use that ledge
to reduce my speed and wound up getting sideways and dropping the last
bit. The combination of an estimated 230 pounds (rider+uni+gear) dropping
a foot or so, with a side force, crunched the thing instantly.
That was about 3 miles into the Slickrock Trail. Fortunately I never go
anywhere without a spoke wrench, and along with some brute force, I managed
to at least get it so it only rubbed the frame when I had a lot of torque
on. The next phase in unicycle technology; reactive braking!
The thing flexed noticably, and I avoided a few drops I would normally
have tried, but it got me through the rest of the ride (~8 miles) and
up to Porcupine Rim on Sunday.
I would say it was a bit of bad luck, combined with poor technique.
It wasn’t quite as pathetic as my crank, though; I bent that about
60 seconds out of the parking lot.

thanx for your thoughts
as you may know,im soon building a 29er for some off road use.that CR18 is pretty skinny.im not suprized it folded.i’ll be going with a Rhyno lite at 27mm wide.
i’d hate to fold my wheel on its first day but i hope with some reservations i will be able to do 1 or 2ft drops without damage.
my goal is to create a lighter, faster Muni.

I’ve ridden it off-road many times; just not on stuff as hard and
technical as Slickrock. It’s a fine setup for cross-country dirt
trails and moderate singletrack.
I’m replacing the rim with a Velocity Dyad.
