Ping--Jason Question about your DM cranks

i just got my Summit which has the same style of cranx as your KH24.

from what i can remember you got the DM’s because of the sticky outy bits hitting your ankles…?

then you searched only to find that DM was the only crank to come in 170. then when you get them, you mount them and secure them only with the pinch bolt, right?

my question is,why not just grind off the sticky out part of the KH cranx and secure them with the pinch bolt on them?

Jagur, read the thread “Future of KH hub/cranks?”

Re: Ping–Jason Question about your DM cranks

Jagur,

I was hitting my heels on the end bolt protrusion not my ankles. I believe trials riders have hit their ankles though.

I had considered the grinding solution and I think it would work but I decided against it beacuse it wouldn’t allow me to place an end bolt on the axle. I wanted the end bolts in place to prevent mud from entering the threaded cavity and rusting my axle/hub from the inside out.

The DM solution was expensive but I don’t regret it. With th the added Q-factor I find my uni handles better than it did when I was riding it with the KH cranks. It’s a sweet KH24.

Cheers,
Jason

Re: Re: Ping–Jason Question about your DM cranks

after riding for a few days i see what you mean,i had thought the only issue was ankle hits.

as the foot comes around full circle, right as you start the power stroke, the heel of your shoe comes down on the nubby thing and pop’s your foot off the pedal.i ware size 8 shoes so i can imagine the adjustment for a size 10er or up.

i still think you could have saved $200 bones, just by buzzing that nub off and screwing in a headless bolt to keep the threads rust free.

if your using just the pinch bolt on the DM’s by the way, doesnt that seem like the torsion/flex would slowly make the crank arm crawl to the outside of the axle?

Re: Re: Re: Ping–Jason Question about your DM cranks

Jagur,

You’re description of the heel strike to the barrel protrusion on the “power stroke” is spot on. Personally I upd enough without the added hassel. As you probably know KH is redisigning his cranks so the new design won’t have this issue.

Only time will tell if crawling on the axle will become an issue with the DM’s. I’ve cranked the pinch bolts down real tight and so far that hasn’t been an issue. The DM’s have worked out fantastic for me so far.

Jason
