Picking Up Objects the Ground: How?

I’ve started juggling and riding. A major difficulty is when you drop a ball you
need to dismount, pick up the ball, and remount. So picking stuff up from the
ground is quite an important skill I’d like to learn. My uni is 24". I can ride
forward, idle with both feet, ride backwards, even in circles.

But how to do it? Tammy and Tanya
(http://members.tripod.com/~MarshT/index.html)have a method where they stop
their pedals at horizontal, lean forward, pick up your stuff, and just before
the faceplant, you ride forward.

Keiar Renaud, our top rider here in Toronto, has a way of leaning his body to
one side, his uni to the other, and can touch the riding surface.

I’ve started with a 10" high (25cm) milk bottle and can touch the top. I
sometimes can scoop the handle, which is 8.5" (22cm), but it’s a long way down
to a 2.5" juggling ball.

It seems like very few people can pick up balls from the ground. Is this an
elite group? Can anyone pass on some advice?

Any chance you can teach that trick to me? Maybe it’s because I go to an
engineering school, but I’m impressed when we get one girl to show up at one of
our unicycling/juggling club meetings.

Indeed. In parades, I used to get more audience response from picking a club off
the ground than I got for juggling three of them.

I used to be able to pick up most anything from a 24" unicycle. Now I’m
embarrassed to admit I’m not as “limber” as I used to be.

My method is similar, sans near-faceplant. Pedals level. Big bend at waist. I
reach down next to me because in front of the wheel is quite a ways farther. I
used to think I had to be turning to get enough lean, but the reach is slow
enough that the unicycle is not really leaning anyway. Just pause, reach down,
hope it’s far enough, and ride out of it.

I don’t think so. Part of it is just plain flexibility. Work on your stretches
and I think you’ll be able to reach.

Re: Picking Up Objects the Ground: How?

One youngster at my club in the Netherlands is able to pick up smallish objects
(including, IIRC, a juggling ball) from the ground. He has his seat unusually
low, not just for picking things up, but all the time.

Re: Picking Up Objects the Ground: How?

The only thing that I managed to pick up while unicycling was a girl. Those were
in my pre-married days when I used my unicycling for my own evil purposes
instead of good.
