pic conversion

i’m trying to upload a pic to the gallery
it was taken with a mobile phone and saved to my pc as a bmp file
none of the ‘save as…’ functions seem to want to allow me to change the extension and save it as a jpg eg

how do i convert a bmp file into a gallery friendly format?

Both Microsoft Paint (Windows ME) and Microsoft Office 97 Photo Editor can open .bmp files and save as .jpg files

but, trust my irish luck, not paint win 98
grrr

IrfanView is a free graphics program that can convert file formats.

IrfanView also does much more. It can view different graphics files (jpg, bmp, gif, png, etc, etc, etc), convert to different graphics file formats, do basic editing, crop pictures, resize pictures, and more. And it’s free.

I’ve always wondered…what size photos do those mobile phones take?

thanx john
i’ll get this downloaded this afternoon

does this answer your question?

arm.bmp (198 KB)

Wow, that’s surprisingly good for a mobile phone. Why would it take them as .bmp then when it could use .jpg and have heaps smaller file sizes? (I have no idea what I’m talking about).

my friend took the pic for me and then emailed it from his phone
i just saved it to my desktop and only realised it was bmp when i tried to upload it to the gallery
oddly enough, u can’t add bmp’s to the gallery but u can add them to a post
go figure

yeah, ive been stupified by the bmp file thing before too.somtimes a pic in the gallery will be a jpg but if you download it,it automaticly converts to a bmp. for some stupid reason…leaving you having to convert it just reload it another gallery

Jagur, the most probable reason is that your internet cache is full. Delete some files there.

(Don’t ask me why a full cache would have this effect.)

im not sure what that is exacly but i dont think its that, its happened on more than one computer.

this pic is a good example, try saveing to your PC then notice thats its no longer a jpg. if you right click properties,it says its a jpg!then it just changes

That’s a known problem with IE. For some wierd reason it will save some pictures as a BMP instead of a JPG. Quite annoying.

One workaround for the problem is to refresh the page (F5 or click the Refresh button) and then try saving the picture again.

When I went to the full resolution version of the picture you linked to it wanted to save as a BMP. When I refreshed the page and tried to save it again it saved as a JPG.

There is a Microsoft Knowledge Base article about the problem.
Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format
Their first suggestion is to clear the cache. That didn’t work for me with the picture of you going down the stairs. Clicking refresh is what got it to save for me.
