Today 9 unicyclists rode 10.8 miles and 3300’ up Mt Diablo in the 21st
annual Mt Diablo Challenge. It was a gorgeous warm day with amazing views
from the summit. It seemed as if there were almost twice as many cyclists as
last year; Bruce’s number was over 1000. And a couple of records were set:
Gary Kanuch pushed his fastest unicycle time back from approx 1:21:40 to
(approx) 1:17:40, and Scot Cooper blasted up the whole course,
dismount-free, on his giraffe! Man there huge cheers when he crossed the
line. New hardware too - Glen rode a home-made carbon fiber Coker - light as
a feather! Tom rode a Pashley 29" and it is great. Pump it up to 80psi and
it motors, also very light.
Check out the official website created by Gary: www.mtdiablochallenge.com
where full results will be posted soon.
But who was the mystery man with the toe-clips on his unicycle? If you’re
reading this, write and tell us about it. You’re really brave!
I took a few pictures and put them up at www.movaris.com/nathan/photos.html
along with a few from the 7th California Muni Weekend in Santa Cruz a couple
of weeks ago. John Foss will have more and better, but these are what I got.
Re: Photos: Mt Diablo Challenge and Calif Muni Weekend
And, of course, don’t forget about Gary Kanuch’s original account of his first time doing the Mt Diablo Challenge on his unicycle in the March 2000 issue of On One Wheel. Abstract and photo at:
I don’t see your photos on that page; the most recent is from 9/8/2002.
I put my pictures up at
<http://www.shutterfly.com/osi.jsp?i=67b0de21b30b8a8145f0¬ag=1>.
Most of them were taken at “The Wall”, which is about 100 meters of
14% grade right at the top of the climb. Most of the unis were ahead
of me so I only got photos of the few behind me.
It was a great day; I got dozens of positive comments and not a single
clown, circus, or “where’s your other wheel” remark the whole time.
We started at the back and must have passed two or three hundred
bicyclists!

The article in the Contra Costa Times included this passage:
