I was just passing some 'phone numbers from The Catch to someone and I
thought of something you too probably ought to know. British people should
already know about it, but the maintainers of FAQ’s including British 'phone
numbers should also be informed.
In April, British Telecom is having what it calls Phone Day. What it means
is that the dialling codes for all British exchanges will change. The new
codes have been valid for several months already. From April, the old codes
will be invalid.
Most codes will simply have a 1 inserted after the first digit, for
example the dialling code for Bath will change from 0225 to 01225. The
only exceptions are 2 or 3 major cities, which will be given completely
new codes. One of the cities is Bristol, I think Liverpool is another,
but I can't tell you any more than that off the top of my head. London
doesn't get a completely new code - the current codes (071 and 081) will
change to 0171 and 0181 respectively, in line with most of the others.
