Mini Penny update!
Hi everyone,
So my frame builder has finished my mini penny, and it’s rideable! Unfortunately I am interstate for work til the end of the month, but he took a couple of snaps and has been test riding it for me. At the moment it’s built up with junk components he had laying around, but I plan to upgrade everything, get the frame powder coated, bling up the back wheel and maybe even mount a magura (mini penny endo’s here I come!!)
Here’s a couple of snaps to wet your appetites! Looking forward to getting home to test ride it, but for now my mates are putting it through it’s paces (lucky them!).
Cheers,
Dmac
Very nice. The seat looks particularly uncomfortable however, that’s the first thing I’d be swapping out.
Will you be playing polo on it?
Now that’s im on something with 2 wheels, the “polo purists” won’t be able to complain anymore!!
Howdy all,
Here’s an update on my penny project. Lady Mini Penny, the 3rd, had her social unveiling on the weekend at the Adelaide Tweed Ride. I’ve attached a photo of her with two of her bigger friends…haha.
We had a great tweed ride, 168 riders in total, and a glorious warm sunny day to get around in some old school tweed. Now the plan is to strip “Lady” (as she’s known) down to a frame, get her powder coated matte black, leave the front fork chrome, and then get some white pin striping hand painted down the frame.
She is super easy to ride, downhills are great as you can stand on the back pegs and coast, and use your foot on the back wheel to regulate speed. Uphills she cranks, and if you really get into it her back wheel lifts off the ground and it’s just like riding a unicycle…
Her head angle is a little steep, meaning that the steering is a little twitchy at times, but I am going to put a longer stem on to try and counteract this. If it’s still a bit twitchy I might end up switching the rear wheel from a 16" to a 12" to drop the head angle a bit, but hopefully the current setup will just take a little more getting used to
I’ve order a Brooks Flyer Special for the saddle, a new chrome stem and bars, and some leather grips. I’m also going to put some grip tape on the back pegs for extra grip and to protect the powder coating. She should come up nice and bling by the time all the renovations are complete!
Cheers,
Dmac
We had a go on some penny farthings when we were bored at BJC one year. So much fun. The ones with massive wheels look so sketchy though.
Heres the resulting video:
That’s awesome! I love the hopping up stairs on what looks to be a 29.
I want one now.
This thread is cool. I want one now too!
I’ve recently encountered one working as a commercial on my way to work.
Once I’ve seen even smaller one nearby but it was too cold and wet to stop and take a photo.
check the cranks on that bad boy !
Does anyone have plans for a penny farthing? I would love to build one! or anywhere in north america that ships to canada?
there farily simple and quite hard to mess the geomotery up it depends what size yo want the wheel really if you go for a standard size ( 36 29) there not to hard but if you want a bigger wheel then things start to get tricky
I rode my ‘ordinary bike’ to the 3rd Annual Bellingham Bike-In and Bicycle Show and Shine today. It won 3rd Place Vintage! Made it all the way home non-stop!
.
That looks bloody awesome.
Penny Farthing
Joe, you will NEVER stop amazing me. Love you MY MILLENNIUM MAN!!!
Almost complete mini penny…
Howdy all,
Here are a couple more shots of my mini penny project. Almost complete now, just waiting on the hub to come back from the powdercoaters so I can rebuild the wheel (currently running the Ti wheelset from my triton). Also got to get the stem polished, and then it’s pretty much done!
I used adhesive grip tape for the back pegs, has worked a treat to protect the powdercoat and provide some grip on the bare pegs.
I’ve gotten used to the head angle now, the thing is great fun to cruise on I have also sourced a 12" wheel for the back when I ride it offroad. Should get it next week, then it’s game on.
Cheers,
Dmac
Just awesome!
Beautiful
Daniel, next step is with Schlumpf hub ?
HI Didier,
It’s certainly a possibility, I just need to work out how to stop the thing if I end up putting a schlumpf in it… haha.
I’d like to build its big brother, a 36inch/12inch version with the same frame design. That with a schlumpf would be insane
On my wish list is also a classic 54" inch penny…
Now, all I need to do is win the lottery. Haha Hope you’re doing well mate
Cheers,
Daniel
