Howdy geeks. I’m tired of my current PC. It’s got all the old AGP, IDE, etc. connections, and I want the latest and greatest swag. It’s actaully a really nice box, with 1.5 gigs of RAM, a 2.6 GHz Pentium 4, an 80 gig and 500 gig HDD, and an AGP 512 mb ATI Radeon X1600 video card. BUT, I want to build a super sick new one, with all the greatest (reasonably priced) gear. Oh, and I need a clear lighted case… w00t.
So, I’m basically gonna buy a case w/ PS, and then just build it up over the course of a few months or however long it takes to get the money for and buy all the components. I hope to throw Ubuntu and Vista on it (gotta have DX10…appologies to Linus, RMS, and ESR.)
Oh, and I’ll probably give my current PC to my little bro, who currently has a Gateway 2000 … circa 1997. 400 MHz Pentium 2 FTW, biotch.
I’m just curious to see if there’s any other PC builders out there. Do you have any tips? Pics of your rigs?
Now it’s an AMD 2400 with a 7600 Nvidia card. Nothing special really. Been a few years on this MB I guess. Still plays all the games I’ve tried, at least at low res. Story of my life LOL. I’ve got a 500 GB HD, which is super cool, I do a lot of bit torrent.
I’m a cheap ass, so I plan to hold out a while. Maybe I can wait until DDR3 is cheap and mainstream !
My box will need the whole shebang for the next upgrade, so I’m gonna drag this one out a ways. In box building, procrastination is money LOL !
It is kinda fun studying all the new stuff. I don’t bother to keep up, I just get immersed when I’m buying.
I’m a big AMD fanboy, if only cause I don’t want them to go under ! Still, it really does look like those core duo chips are happening now. I ran a 400 celeron at 550 with a home made water cooler back when UT was all the rage.
All I can suggest is to do a lot of reading, and also consider over clocking a cheaper possessor with a good heat sink, if you want to save some $. The latest and greatest is always way over priced. In box building, it really pays to hack a bit to get by. In a couple years you may be tossing away what you’re buying now.
Ive been building computers for about 6 years now.
My closet is filled (neatly) with cases, motherboards, hard drives, video and sound cards, ram, processors and all the other little wires and stuff needed to get a computer up and running.
I am going to build a DAW for me and the band for Christmas and bring it to the band room so we can record whatever we want to.
Ive built up so many computers now, so its hard to say how many I have done. In the past month I have done 5, and add that to whatever I have done before. lol
Except for the first PC I bought used for $300, I’ve always built my own. My advice is to buy just above the most inexpensive components, and run linux because it’s more scalable than the latest, hopefully most bugfree version of Windows. There’s no reason to spend so much money on a computer if you’re a DIY geek unless you’re getting paid to do so. If I wanted to spend more than $700 on a desktop computer, I’d just buy something prebuilt.
No way man!! Its a classic. Probably worth a fortune the old Atari to some retro freak. Every couple of years i get it out for a day or two just to have a good laugh at the sh*t we used to play. WOW!! look at these cool graphics.
The monitor, keyboard, mouse, spearks . . . are your prefrence but this in my openion is pretty damn good. I made a general reccomendation for the case but that again is your preference.
