Due to a possible threadjacking going on over here, I decided to give it its own thread. I realize it was just another Logan_A thread, but it was a threadjacking nonetheless.
I just got home from seeing it, thought it was great, I was wondering what others thought of it.
It was sure different from any other movie I’ve ever been to, in that when the credits started rolling, everyone just sat there, dead silent. Like hear-a-pin-drop kind of silence. Pretty incredible.
Yeh, I looked back at everyone else in the audience during part of it and everyone was glued to the screen. It got about 2 stars over here though. I thought it was very powerful. I didn’t ‘enjoy’ it as such but I am glad I saw it.
I reeaally want to see it. My parents won’t let me, though, because it’s TOO BLOODY or what not. But I’m not a child any more, I’m a real boy!
And if I wait for it on video, my parents won’t rent it. So I need to see it soon.
Just to bring the discussion about ratings over to this thread…‘R’ in Australia means that you can’t see the movie (with or without an adult) unless you’re over 18. It is rated MA here.
It is in three languages, Hebrew, Aramaic, and Latin. The entire movie is done with everyone speaking the language they historically would have spoken. The entire movie is subtitled.
The subtitles didn’t seem like they’d work for me at first, but I got used to them, it helped that I know about what happened to Jesus from the bible, and the movies pretty inline with what actually happened. Now if I remember parts of the movie I kinda make it into english, although I dont’ remember the speaking that much as what I saw.
The thing that stuck me most was " the passion" that Jesus had in the movie to make it to the cross. He didn’t resist when they arrested him, he didn’t defend himself when accused, when he did speak it was the truth, but it got him in deeper not off the hook. When they whipped him he fell over, but he got up. When he was carrying the cross they still whipped him, like carrying it wasn’t hard enough, and he worked as hard as he could to get the cross to where it had to be so they could pin him to it. He didn’t resist when they put the nails in his hand, and he didn’t accept the " gall " I guess it was, which I heard would of helped numb the pain I think, could be wrong, he was in this with all his heart.
So I think the title fits, because Jesus faced everything with passion and he did it all for us, so our sins would be paid for and we could see how much he loves us. Like he said in the movie I think, if not in the bible, no one takes his life from him, they can’t, that power is his, he laid it down for us, only to take it back up again. His death paid our debt so we don’t have to, and his coming back to life gives us the oppertunity to live a new life. Please don’t think this is just a movie, cause it’s not, it’s more than any movie could be.
well said Andrew, i haven’t seen it yet and truth be told i am a bit afraid to see it, it reduced grown men that i know to tears. When it comes to Moose Jaw next week i will probably go and see it tho.
Too bad they messed up trying to have it in the original language. The romans at the time did not speak latin they most likely were speaking a form of greek as was custom of roman territories of the time.
they call the latin “street Latin” and claim that it is historically accurate. I have nothing to base this off of other than claims I have heard made, so it may not be correct.
What I do know for sure is that the upper class of the time spoke Greek and not many others did.
I couldn’t really tell who was speaking what, although if I knew the languages they were speaking that’d be pretty cool to watch it then.
I was trying to learn Russian, but I haven’t been getting much of anywhere and haven’t tried for awhile. I did notice that some of what was said in the movie sounded kinda Russian though, so thats cool.
I believe that if you are to listen to the higher class romans would speak some form of greek (unknown to me but definitly wasnt latin) they would speak a form of greek to one another, but they would speak latin when adressing the common public.
About 40 + years ago, the comedian Lenny Bruce said: If Jesus Christ had come today, a lot of people would be wearing electric chairs around their necks.
I know it’s a bit off track, but I can’t help remembering this when I think about Mel Gibson’s movie: Methods of capitol punishment have changed so much. If Jesus were electrocuted (or given the gas chamber, or…) rather than crucified, would the movie be so popular. Last 12 hours: getting a visit from someone, eating his last meal (what would Jesus select?), the guards shouting “Dead Man Walking…”
I didnt understand that quote at first but it has come to me alas. I do like that and it has it good points. But wasn’t the cross a symbol for religous beliefs and god even before the crucifictioin of Jesus? I really have no idea thats why I’m asking…or was it a symbol because of it. Id thought it had been a symbol even before and then the quote wouldnt make much sense but i dont know, im tired, im going to bed.
The cross was not a religious symbol before Jesus died, it was simply a means of capitol punishment, which lends some credit to that quote. However Jesus was God in human form (part of the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit), because of this he had the power to command a legion of angels to rescue him or whatever he wanted them to do. (look at Matthew 4:6) My point is that yes, this quote has some truth in it, that being that if Jesus had died in another time it probably would have been done differently (although Old Testament prophesies did say He would be hung on a tree but that is another matter all in it’s self) but the fact remains that he had the power to stop it and he didn’t so He could make the sacrifice for all of us.
that answers more than u asked fluffinator007 but i just got to typen and thats what came out.
