Parkour meets Halo...

Hey guys, I found this on Reddit (.com; lots of random stuff there). It’s a new game coming out called Mirror’s Edge, and it seems to have lots of parkour-ish movement in it. I’ve certainly never seen anything like it. It’s pretty killer-looking, and the graphics are definitely sweet. You can see the trailer at http://www.gamewithabrain.com/2008/05/08/news/parkour-meets-halo-in-mirrors-edge

it looks possibly quite The Fun™. As with all awesome looking games it will surely have it’s downsides that eventually make people shrug and walk away. Assassins creed looked awesome too but as it turned out it had it’s quite large bugs that detracted from it seriously. I have a sneaky suspicion that although Mirror’s Edge looks like a sandbox game it is probably fairly linear. Things like the red pipes between buildings to the red ramp (a ramp on a roof?) to what looks like would have been a grab to the red pipes on the wall… red seems to be the key here, and i would say there’s fair restriction on where and what you can do.

it’d be awesome if it turns out that it really does give the ability to freely explore and find neat ways to get around different places, and half the fun will be discovering these places. And maybe throw in a touch of Crackdown’s ever-expanding ability to find new and previously unfound areas perhaps.

I don’t know. It’ll surely kill my pc if it isn’t restricted to being released on consoles… might just be the one to push me to go the 360… unlikely though. I’d sure love to play this game that’s for sure. Great ad for it, but hope it isn’t pushing this to be a game that it simply isn’t.

[edit] looking at it again… it’s pretty much red all the way through. there are a few bits where you aren’t on something red, but in that regard you can’t have a whole ‘world’ painted red (or black, even if you want it painted black… not even if it’s a strange red door that you wanted painted black… no colours anywhere you want them painted blaaaaack). The next bit after the red pipe wall grab would be to a climb to (did you see it) opening a red door. and then you have the reveal shot of your character on a (wait for it) RED CRANE! I’m already feeling like this is going to end-up giving the impression of basically being on rails with limited control :frowning:

oh well a little googling is always a reveal…

  1. How much focus will the concept of free roaming have? Do we get to run around wherever we want on the rooftops or are we somehow restricted to specific levels?

There seems to be some confusion about this - this is not a free-roaming game – and I think it is a better game for that. We have a story-driven action game and we want you to experience the story. There are however multiple ways of tackling every level whether it is the routes you take or the combat style you adopt. Also the type of movement we have in the game turns almost any area into a mini-sandbox. You will not feel restricted in the game.

ah well can’t have it all i guess. still want to play it just for the sake of seeing it in action.

That looked pretty rediculous. It would seem that the red objects are important ones you have to hit, then the others are all things along the way that you can if you need to.

I don’t care if its a free roamer or not, it still looked amazing.
