Painted Ladies

In the last couple of weeks, unusually large numbers of Vanessa Cardui have chosen my common MUni trails as playground. Often, every 5 to 10 m one is basking in the evening sun and fortunately I’ve on every occasion been able to swerve around them in the rare cases they don’t fly away on my approach. Vanessa Cardui (L.) is in English known as the Painted Lady; or as the Cosmopolitan for its exceptionally wide geographic distribution.

To me, butterflies (and moths, fot that matter) are the sweetest animal suborder. Does anyone here share that interest?

Re: Painted Ladies

I have, since I was a child, been irrationally and excessively terrified of butterflies. I can appreciate their beauty, but only from a distance.

I think my older brother may have told me they eat little kids or something when I was really young.

Bigger fish to… fry?

Butter flies are great!! The live ones are the best! It’s cool when they land right by you or on you and spread their wings back and forth and you can see all the brilliant colors, whether they are bright or dark, they’re all cool. My all time favorite has probably got to be the Zebra Heliconian, for now, I haven’t seen 'em all, yet. When I go to Hawaii this summer, I hope to snag a few shots of some Vanessa Tameamea, that would be great!! WEEE!!

man,i havent seen a Tiger Swallowtail here in Oregon for a long time,or a Monarch for that matter.

i think the use of DDT 10 years ago has really messed things up.

There is an indoor butterfly house at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle. It’s in the Seattle Center complex near the Space Needle.

Here is a VR tour of the butterfly house. I zoomed all around and was unable to find a butterfly in the picture. Hummmf. Where are they hiding?

I’ve been to the butterfly house a couple of times. It’s a good way to get to see several varieties of butterflies.

I wonder how long Raphael could last locked inside the butterfly room? :astonished:

Probably about as long as you could at a Nader rally.

More than likely it is a natural occurance that has changed their habits.

Actually I wouldn’t get bothered by a Nader rally. They’re mostly harmless. And the more people who vote Green the better (as long as they never actually win <grin>) – It means less votes for Democrats. When I see Green party people campaigning I wish them luck and ask them a few questions.

What would bother me is being forced to attend a Clinton love fest, schmooze fest or some rally where one of the Clintons starts talking policy. I don’t know how long I could last before I flip them off and get pummeled by the crowd and the secret service.

Now that this thread is completely off topic I feel safe to say when I first saw the title I thought it had something to do with a 30 year old Elton John song from Goodby Yellow Brick Road.

Thank goodness it was about butterflies. They’re cool, they’re beautiful, but close up their bodies can look scarry.

Woodland Park Zoo has a pretty good seasonal live exhibit too.

I’m always amused by how much animosity the right still harbors against Clinton. His criminality was nothing compared to the Nixon, Reagan and Bush (I and II) administrations. And as for policy he undid welfare, which no Republican could ever have gotten away with, gladly went on bombing raids abroad, abandoned healthcare reform as soon as it become troublesome, for political reasons allowed a retarded man to be executed, and passed the 1996 telecommunications act further centralizing media power in a few corporate hands. The right ought to have loved this guy.

I didn’t like the guy because, well, because of the above.

I don’t know how long I could last before I flip them off and get pummeled by the crowd and the secret service. (Geez, John, another thing we agree on.)

Not to go anymore off topic, of course.

Maybe if the butterflies sense Raphael’s fear he could become the first victim of the Tropical Butterfly House hordes of bloodthirsty winged insects. They will have to change their disclaimer into “To this date only one person has been attacked by the marauding bands of butterflies inhabiting…do not provoke the butterflies!”

“Naturally”, a chemist would say that.

nice!

as a kid i remember butterflies being all over this part of the world, caterpilers were crawling up the side of our school.now i cant find a single one or a crytalis to save my life.

suddenly i feel like a lab rat…

The Matrix is all around you.

We have more in common that one would expect.

And for the record, some of the reasons that you provided for why a right leaning person should actually like Clinton are actually some of the reasons why I despise him (and her).
