Painful saddle

Hi everyone,

I have spent the last couple of years riding my 19" uni mainly on my decking. I’ve been practicing basic tricks and control.

As i’m getting more comfortable on my uni i’m starting to venture out on my bigger uni for longer rides.
The most i’ve ridden is 11km on one ride.

What i’ve noticed is that physically I seem fine and no longer get exhausted when riding.
But i do get very uncomfortable up to a point of it being painful.

I’ve noticed it’s the place between my inner thighs and how do i put it, my balls lol.

In this space it seems to be the edge of my pants rubs my skin.

Is there something to counteract this or is it basically the wrong seat for me?

I have a Nimbus stadium seat and i feel like i sit on top of it. With my Impact saddle i sit more “in” it.

Is it worth trying my Impact saddle on my Nimbus Hatchet?

Just to add i’m using long cranks and so my legs have a big spinning circle.
160mm on a 24" Nimbus Hatchet.

don’t you scrape the floor with 160mm cranks on the 24" wheel?

Someone posted on here at some point to try to ride while standing on the pedals for 10 or so seconds. That will get the blood flowing and allow you to sit for another length of time. It has helped me a lot. That way you don’t have to get off the unicycle and take a break.

Also I don’t think it matters how long your cranks are. You can adjust the seat height to what feels comfy while riding. As long as you have some room between your crutch and the seat when standing, it should be ok.

There are many different seats out there and what is comfy to one is uncomfy to another. For me the standard seats on the Nimbus municycles are very comfortable

  1. Invest in bike shorts and learn how to wear it.
  2. Impact saddle is surprisingly good for moderate distance rides. Nimbus Stadium is not for everyone. I would suggest you to try to swap these saddles.
  3. Maybe you should change the angle between your seat and the post.
  4. 160mm is too long for distance rides. If you have an option to install <150mm cranks, give it a try. 100-125mm cranks could improve your experience.
  5. Seat height is important too.

I believe for my latest unis I request the Fusion Freeride saddles. The Slim and One are too narrow for me and I lose control of the uni.

Nimbus air saddle cover will make most saddles more comfortable and longer rides possible. $50 on UDC. I have them on the three unicycles a I ride longer distances on. Also a simple athletic supporter or compression under shorts will help keep things in place

That is surprising indeed. Are we talking about the same saddle? My impact saddle is hard as a rock, and I can really feel the weight of ny thighs on it after just a few km.

Do you have any suggestions how to ride more comfortably on it? I really prefer the softer Freeride saddles.

Thanks for the advice, i chose 160mm on the 24" because it feels similar gearing to my 19".
But it does suck on distance. I can’t really get a decent speed with them.

I have an impact like that one plus an older one that is a lot more comfy. I think there’s a cheaper Impact saddle and more expensive one.
Apparently yours is good for trials.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I have qu-ax in 145mm and 125mm.
I’m not very good with shorter cranks but will try the 125mm again.
The 160mm feels similar to riding my 19".

Nah, I don’t have the same problems as OP. This is more an uncomfortable in general issue for such a hard seat. But it is Okay enough for a while actually.

Yes, basic Impact saddle (identical to Nimbus Flat) is hard as a rock, but it is not too curvy and quite narrow in the middle. It is not the best distance saddle on the market, but it is worth trying if you have one (and OP mentioned that he has an Impact saddle).

My son rides 1000-1300 miles (1500-2000km) per year, and his saddle preferences (for the distance):

  1. KH Fusion One
  2. KH Freeride
  3. Impact Athmos / Nimbus Flat

This saddle has nuts at the bottom. It is not designed for Basketball or Hockey. It is not designed for any activity where you need to grab any part of the saddle in a hurry. These nuts are a recipe for finger injuries.
I consider this design as a low-level costs-cutting approach.

I too prefer screw heads to nuts for this. That said, acorn nuts are rather effective in lowering the risk for injured fingers.
The OP is looking for a seat for distance riding, so he (hopefully) won’t have to grab the seat every other minute to prevent the uni from crashing to the ground. I think in that scenario acorn nuts are an adequate solution, if not the ideal solution. I know they were for me on my 29er, before I replaced the seat for other reasons.
