So I ordered a Coker Big One unicycle, and plan on using it mostly for road use. I can see myself wishing to do more with it in the future, and as I have bent many square tapers in the past I want to know my options for upgrading to an ISIS hub in the future.
Has anyone here upgraded a Coker to ISIS hub? I know the rim that comes with it is 48h so that limits hub options. If I were to get a 36h rim and an ISIS hub, would that wheel build work on the Big One frame?
Well I bought the Coker because it was half the price of a Nimbus or KH. I was just wondering my options for upgrading if I wanted to do so in the future. And like I said, I plan on using it for the road mostly, I guess if I want to do any crazy stuff I can stick to my 29er :D.
Decent square taper cranks are plenty strong when properly installed. On a road uni you won’t be as abusive. Secondly, you will most likely be running shorter cranks with less leverage. A lot of strong riders have been happy with ST cranks on cokers.
As an aside, the nimbus extra wide Isis hub is supposed to be incompatible with the big one frame. Apparently the flanges are set just a little wider and the spokes hit the frame.
I built my 36er using a Coker wheel and KH frame. Swapping the Coker hub to a 100mm 48h Nimbus ISIS hub was straightforward and I reused the spokes from the Coker wheel without issue.
It was 2010 though I didn’t buy a full unicycle, just the wheel. Coker has since stopped selling the wheel alone but yes, it is the same as the current model.
Just to be clear, I never used the Coker hub. I replaced it with a Nimbus 48h ISIS hub and put the wheel in a KH frame.
